New Aquathon Series set to hit Christchurch

Christchurch fitness enthusiasts will face a new challenge this summer
with the launching of the inaugural Active Health QEII Aquathon Series.

Aquathons – swim/run races- are a relatively new sport around the beaches
of New Zealand and are similar to a triathlon minus the bike section. The
four race series is set to kick off on January 17th with Race #1 "The
Appetiser" being held at Scarborough Beach over a 400m Swim and 3km Run.
The Series then goes to Corsair Bay for Race #2 "The Gut Buster" - 600m
Swim / 4km Run, Race #3 "The Sand Challenge" goes to New Brighton Beach –
800m Swim/ 6km Run and the series concludes with the Canterbury Champs
"The Main Event" – 1000m Swim/7.5km back at Scarborough Beach.

The series is aimed at a variety of people: triathletes preparing for a
big race, a surf lifesavers looking for a new challenge and anyone who
wants to get out and have a bit of fun on the beach – the Aquathon series
offers something for everyone. If the distances seem at all intimidating
there is also the team’s section which is always very popular. Best of all
sponsorship from the likes of Orca, Adidas, Les Mills, QEII, Carboshotz,
MoreFM, Restaurant Bella, Scotty Browns and NZ Endurance Sports Magazine
mean there are loads of prizes for everyone.

Competition at the head of the field will feature some of the best
athletes in New Zealand with the likes World #3 Craig Watson locking horns
with fellow National representative Kris Gemmel - both using the series as
a building block towards the National Champs in March. Overseas athletes
will also be prominent with visiting athletes from Canada, Hong Kong,
Switzerland, Scotland, Sweden and France all expected to line up in some
of the races.

Anyone interested in entering can find entry forms at Active Health QEII,
Les Mills, Scotty Browns Cyclesave, MoreFM, QEII and most sports shops

A NOTE FROM EVE
( an abbreviated note from Evelyn Williamson )

Race 1 of the Air New Zealand Pro Tour was first up – November 18th - and
despite a limited build up I managed a win in the unfamiliar supersprint
format (200 swim, 10k cycle, 2k run).

Race 2 of Pro Tour – Dec 2nd - didn’t go the way I would have liked. Held
over the sprint distance (500swim, 20k cycle, 5 k run) I am in an unenviable
position of again being the solo ‘rabbit’ trying to hold of chase bunches on
the cycle and run sections. With a couple of very strong domestic athletes
in the series this year the bunch is well organised and I will have my work
cut out for me to defend my title. So at the very least it will make for
some interesting racing.

Race 2 of the Stroke & Stride series was on the 28th November (750swim, 4km
Run). Again, it didn’t feel too flash but snuck in for a win.

My next race is Jan 10th (stroke & stride) and Jan 27th Air NZ Pro Tour
