TWO KIWIS GRAB MEDALS IN GOODWILL GAMES TRIATHLON
from Tri NZ Media Commissioner Ian Hepenstal
Hamish Carter surprised himself with his silver medal winning performance in
the Goodwill Games triathlon at Brisbane today.
Carter, with limited preparation following an Achilles injury, was
comfortably second behind Kiwi-born Australian Chris McCormack, while fellow
New Zealander Craig Watson broke clear from the chase pack for the bronze
medal.
Carter, the former world No 1, grabbed a vital lead out of the three-lap
river swim in downtown Southbank, before McCormack broke out of the pack
early on the run.
``Macca is the strongest rider in the sport at the present and I managed to
hang on to the back of him when he caught up,’’ Carter said.
The New Zealander, who limped home in 46th place at last month’s world
championships in Canada, was only able to begin running two weeks ago, and
restricted himself to low-speed work.
``I had no idea how I would go. I could not really push things in training,
although I was really happy with my swimming and biking. But I didn’t feel
achilles at all on the run, although I just couldn’t hang on Chris in the
final kilometre.
``Considering my buildup I feel bloody great and certainly surprised myself.
’’
McCormack and Carter opened up a 2min 30sec advantage off the bike.
``The race for first and second was over before the run,’’ world No 3 Watson
said.
``The bike course was very tight and technical with some hills. Frankly I
didn’t feel that good all day but seem to come right later in the run,’’
said Watson who flew from Europe this week.
``It’s been a bit difficult and I thought I would do well or bomb. I felt
terrible on the first lap on the run, but got better and better.’’
Watson was in a group of nine in the chase bunch, out-lasting world champion
Peter Robertson and world No 1 Chris Hill, both of Australia, along with
fellow Kiwi Shane Reed who held on for ninth place.
All the Kiwis ran prominently with Kris Gemmell and Bevan Docherty pushing
from the second pack on the bike to finish provisionally in 11th and 13th
places respectively.
The small field of 25 premier starters broke up into small bunches which
surprised both Carter and Watson.
Watson flies out for the lucrative LA Triathlon next weekend before
returning to Europe where he plans to start in the famous Nice long distance
race on the French Riviera.
Carter will return to Auckland tomorrow before deciding if he will start in
Los Angeles and the remaining World Cup races in South America and Mexico.
The women’s race saw Australia’s Loretta Harrop defend her Goodwill Games
title from American Barb Lindquist and fellow Australian Nicole Hackett,
after the trio broke the race open on the bike.
American Siri Lindley, who has won seven races in a row this season, missed
the leaders out of the water as the trio opened up a winning four-minute
advantage.

END OF SEASON HALF IRONMAN FOR NEW ZEALAND
River Promotions are pleased to announce a half Ironman distance triathlon
to be held at Lake Karapiro in the Waikato on Saturday April 13th, 2002.
The event will fill the biggest hole in the current NZ triathlon Calendar -
an event for all those athletes who do not expect to be half Ironman fit
early on in the summer.
For many people December and early January is just too soon to be half

time to build up fitness for an end of season endurance triathlon - for
many it will be their personal end of season finale'
Other features of the event are
* late start ( 12 noon ) to enable a sleep in if you desire.
* fresh water swim
* rolling cycle terrain through quiet, scenic country roads. ( Much of our
course is virgin territory for triathlon courses )
* live band and guest speakers for social function - ( Expect an end of
season Tri Party to remember )
* sunday morning to sleep in before travelling home
* On site accommodation for over 300 people will be available.
* Entry fee below $100 for individuals

WILLIAMSON / AMEY WIN MONSTER CHALLENGE/TRI-BOSTON:
From Triathlon Digest reporting -
The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston, a first-year triathlon with considerable
international intentions, didn't have to look past its debut for an
international impact on Sunday: New Zealand's Evelyn Williamson and ex-Kiwi
Paul Amey provided plenty of foreign flavor in the race at Boston's World
Trade Center.
Williamson, on her way home to New Zealand after three months of racing in
Europe, and Amey, an ex-Kiwi now travelling on a British passport, were the
winners in the Olympic-distance race. Racing on a course with an indoor
transition area and a rooftop finish, they topped a field filled with both
established and emerging Americans - as well as no shortage of world-class
Canadians - on this American holiday weekend.
Amey, who has been training in San Diego County, ran away from a field of
40 male pros - a collection of international talent that assembled in spite
of the same-weekend Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. Amey won by 40
seconds over Nick Radkewich, the U.S. Olympian who is regaining his form
this season after a slow start.
Smyers was a smart choice as a local favorite, given that she has won four
races already this summer, including the Pro National Championships in New
York last month. But the best that Smyers could do was eighth, as -- aside
from Williamson -- Canadian women dominated on the day.
Williamson won only in the last 200 meters, catching bike leader Tereza
Macel as they ran up to the unusual finish on the World Trade Center roof.
Macel, Canada's national champion in 2000, had managed a two-minute lead
off the bike. It was a matchup of winners from two different ITU Points
Races just last weekend, when Williamson - who had won in Muji, Korea --
beat Macel - who had won in San Juan, Puerto Rico -- by nine seconds.
"Teresa was tough," Williamson said. "She gutted it out on the bike entirely
alone, and two minutes is a big margin for anyone to catch. I was really
worried, but I thought I'd give it everything."
"This race definitely has got the basics down," said Williamson, who
actually turned down a place in the Goodwill Games lineup to race in Boston
instead. "It's got some fine-tuning to do, but it was fantastic for a first
year."

DOCHERTY GRABS HIS FIRST WORLD CUP PODIUM FINISH
Taupo triathlete Bevan Docherty grabbed his first podium placing in the ITU
World Cup when he finished third in the ninth round over the demanding
terrain in Lausanne on August 26th.
He finished ahead of Kiwi team-mate and world No 3 Craig Watson, who was
dropped from the leaders on the run, and had to settle for fifth.
Docherty is the most improved triathlete on the ITU circuit this year,
starting the season out of the top 100, with his third placing today lifting
him provisionally to No 12.
The 24-year-old joined Watson in a lead pack that chased down Australian
Courtney Atkinson over the tough climbs and sharp descents in the 40km bike
in the mountains above Lausanne.
The Two New Zealanders pushed into a lead group of six who applied the
pressure to break open the race early on the 10km run, before Watson,
Andreas Raelert (GER) and Maik Petzold (GER) were dropped.
Australian Chris McCormack, chasing his 14th win in all races this year,
opened a 20m advantage over Docherty before Reto Hug, in front of his home
Swiss crowds, burst from third to win in a sprint finish. All three
placegetters finished within seven seconds, with Docherty ecstatic with his
third placing in 1.54.09, with Watson 36 seconds behind in fifth.
World champion and No 1 Siri Lindley continued her remarkable season with
her seventh win on the trot to claim the women’s race. The American
positioned her self in the lead pack and was too strong on the run to
outlast the pack including Olympic champion Brigette McMahon, making a top
level return after taking time out for the birth of her daughter three
months ago.
Results:
ITU World Cup 9th round Lausanne, Switzerland (1.5k swim 40k bike 10k run):

NICE TRIATHLON
Are there are any tri geeks from NZ looking at going to Nice for the Nice
triathlon. Steve Nicholls is going to be there, with bells on, and is
wondering if theres any chance of meeting up, or sharing accomodation with
somebody.
Also any information about the course that anyone can give him would be
most appreciated (ie hill gradients, wetsuit
swims? etc)

NIKE TO BACK IRONMAN NEW ZEALAND TRIATHLON
Ironman New Zealand triathlon has received a boost with the announcement
that sports and fitness company Nike will sponsor the event in Taupo for the
next three years.
New Zealand’s biggest annual international one-day sports event, and the
longest-running international Ironman, moved to Taupo three years ago after
14 years in Auckland.
International Management Group (IMG) NZ Ltd took over ownership of Ironman
New Zealand from Air New Zealand in May and have since signed a three-year
agreement with Taupo District Council to retain the event in Taupo.
IMG believe the Nike support will go a considerable distance towards
financial security for the event.
``We are in Taupo to stay and Nike’s presenting sponsorship will help us
achieve that,’’ Event Director Jane Patterson said.
``This is an excellent association between the world’s leading sports and
fitness company and the world’s leading sports management company.
``We share a number of successful associations around the world and we are
delighted to have the opportunity of a long-term relationship with Nike in
New Zealand.
``We are working very hard to grow this event and this association is good
news for Ironman New Zealand and for Taupo.’’
The unique athletic challenge of the Ironman New Zealand event appealed to
Nike.
``This event is one of the premier international sporting events in New
Zealand,’’ Sports Marketing Manager Clark Todd said.
``The event attracts 1000 competitor from throughout the world, from all
walks of life and all abilities. It is not only a tremendous sporting
contest between some outstanding elite athletes but also a day of remarkable
feats from remarkable people.
``We were delighted to become associated with the event and look forward to
helping it grow.’’

TRIATHLETE FRIENDLY MOTEL
Former Manukau Croc - Garth Wilson has been competing in triathlons for the
past 10 years in races all round the country.
3 weeks ago when we decided to move to Taupo to manage a motel (end of
training)
Our motel, although slightly dated like myself, is right on the Lake edge,
with 5 swimming pools (1 spa pool, 2 heated freshwater pools, 2 heated
mineral pools), magnificent views, walking distance to 3 great restaurants,
warm and comfortable rooms ( chalets to sleep 7 ), reasonable tariffs.
If your coming to Taupo on holiday, to train or compete, your support would
be welcomed.
Keep up the training,
