DOCHERTY GRABS BEST WORLD CUP TRIATHLON FINISH
from Ian Hepenstal
New Zealand triathlete Bevan Docherty picked up his best rest this year
when he finished fifth in the eighth round of the ITU World Cup in Hungary
on Sunday.
Docherty pushed through to the leaders Dimitry Gaag (Kaz) and Martin
Krnavek (Cze) in the early stages on the final 10km run but was outkicked
in the final kilometre by France’s Stephane Poulat for his first podium
finish.
He was the only Kiwi in action at Tiszaujvaros after world No 3 Craig
Watson, No 10 Matt Reed and No 22 Kris Gemmell opted to bypass the race as
the build towards the Goodwill Games in Brisbane in two weeks.
Gemmell and Australian-based Shane Reed have been added to the field,
bringing the Kiwi contingent to six for the prestige Goodwill Games race,
with only 25 starters in the men’s and women’s event that boasts $US30,000
for the winner.
Watson, Matt and Shane Reed, Gemmell, Hamish Carter and Rina Hill will
line up in the Brisbane race, with the European–based Kiwis opting to
prepare for next week’s ninth round of the World Cup in Lausanne as a
final blow out for the Goodwill Games event.
Wellington’s Evelyn Williamson, who has been in strong form, has decided
to bypass the world cup races in favour of the lucrative European Cup
series, after winning the last round two weeks ago.
Docherty, who finished seventh in the world championship last month, was
forced to play catch-up on the bike, working hard with Australians Bryce
Quirk and Levi Maxwell to lead the chase pack up to the lead group of 13
on the 40km cycle.
The Taupo triathlete pushed through to the lead in the early part of the
run with former world No 1 Dimitry Gaag (Kaz) and last start winner Martin
Krnavek (Cze). But he paid the price for his honest endeavours on the
bike, when he was outkicked by Frenchman Stephan Poulat over the final
2kms on the run.
Krnavek went on to win his second world cup race on the trot from Gaag
with Docherty clocking a slick 31.45 on the run for 1.45.09, less than a
minute behind the winner.
The women’s race proved another triumph for world champion and new world
No 1 Siri Lindley who overcame a 1min 30sec deficit out of the water, and
dropped a further minute behind on the bike before slicing through the
field.
It was her sixth major win in a row with four World Cup victories along
with the world championship and world aquathon titles.

TRI NZ BOARD CANDIDATES
from Barry Larsen
Recently in your mail you will have received voting papers for the new
Board. Some people have been confused as to what may constitute a valid
vote so here is a summary and a brief background on the candidates. Please
use your right to vote and also make an effort to attend the AGM on
Saturday 25 August. While the Board come under fire at times I can assure
you they are a hard working bunch who all share at least one thing in
common – An unreserved passion for Triathlon.
Two candidates are listed as standing for vice president and also for the
Board. If you wish for them to be both elected to the Board in addition to
one of them being vice president you must vote for them under each
category.
If you vote for less than the stated number of candidates under each
category your vote will still be valid. Only those candidates you have
voted for will be counted in the vote.
The voting form requires you to put your name and Tri NZ number at the
foot. This is purely to ensure only those entitled to vote, actually vote.
The envelopes will be collected by staff at the TRINZ office, brought to
the meeting unopened and passed to independent scrutineers who will check
the validity of the voter, count the votes and finally destroy the papers
once all are satisfied the procedure has been carried out correctly.

Resort clothing firm wins triathlon deal
17 August 2001
By SUE FEA
A Queenstown clothing company, which has grown from a one-man operation
into a multi-million dollar enterprise, has scored a deal to supply
clothing for 600 volunteers and 1200 competitors at the 2003 world
triathlon championships.
Wild Gravity Ltd, renamed AJ Gear earlier this year, was established in
1991 to provide stylish, but practical clothing for AJ Hackett Bungy.
Yesterday the company was announced as the merchandising sponsors for the
2003 world triathlon Championships and its two lead-in races, to be held
in Queenstown.
General manager Craig Biggs said the company's new look helped establish
it as a clothing brand rather than "a tourist-related byproduct."
International sales had also grown since a new website was launched in
February.
The site was recently named the MacroMedia "site of the day."
Most of the company's lines were manufactured in Invercargill by Apteryx
Clothing and New River Clothing.
