INTERCLUB DUATHLON 2001 - THE SHIELD GOES ON TOUR
Auckland's Manukau Crocs, winner of the last three Interclub Duathlons, have
decided it is time to take the Shield on tour and have kindly agreed to let
North Harbour Triathlon Club host this year's event. Racing on home turf,
this must be the moment that NZ's largest triathlon club proves they are
also NZ's fastest triathlon club...although there are plenty of contenders
willing to prove them wrong. We'll take on all comers, and warmly invite all
triathlon clubs throughout the country to send representatives to Auckland
to contest the shield. There'll be drama, there'll be excitement, and being
a NHTC event, there'll be coffee...
Mark these details on your race calendar now!
Date: 23 September, 10am
Location: Taupaki (north-west of Auckland - just over 20 minutes from the
centre of Auckland)
Distances: 5km run / 18km bike / 2.5km run
Taupaki technically isn't on North Harbour turf, but that's a small price to
pay for a scenic course on quiet country roads. The course is very spectator
friendly so bring your friends and family up to watch. The run course can be
described as flat to undulating while the bike course is hilly (we don't
like drafting) but with some big long straights to get that big chain-ring
going. After the race join us in Kumeu for brunch, coffee and the
announcement of the new Interclub champions...
TEAMS
Teams should be as big as possible. If you can't be the fastest then be the
loudest. This is a good club bonding event so anyone sending an elite-only
squad has missed the point. Some clubs are willing to cover travel expenses
for members, see if yours is one! Billets can gladly be arranged for
out-of-towners (that doesn't include the Crocs). Points will be scored in
the following categories based on finishing position, with the club with the
lowest overall score claiming the Shield.
1st junior male
1st junior female
1st/2nd senior males
1st/2nd senior females
1st veteran male (40 and over)
1st veteran female
However in recognition that some clubs have no junior members we are willing
to bring in a "Dad's army" clause. At the organisers discretion clubs
without a junior male/female will be allowed to substitute an extra veteran
member of the same sex. However you've got seven weeks to recruit some
juniors so we'll expect a pretty good excuse why you haven't been able to!
Entry forms will be out by August 15. In the meantime, get that team
organised and start biking some hills...

TRIATHLON FOR 2006 COMMONWEALTH GAMES:
from Katherine Williams "Tri Digest'
Triathlon, one year away from its Commonwealth Games debut as a medal sport
in Manchester, got another stamp of international approval when the sport
was further confirmed for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in
Melbourne.
Triathlon's inclusion for 2006 was ratified on the weekend by the general
assembly of the Games federation in Manchester. Three other sports were also
added for Melbourne alongside triathlon -- basketball, synchronized diving
and mountain biking,
The four sports' inclusion was all but a formality. The 2002 Commonwealth
Games, from 25 July to 4 August, will feature 72 nations competing in 14
individual sports and three team sports.
Considerably different from the Olympic program, the current Commonwealth
sports are aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics,
field hockey, judo, lawn bowls, netball, Rugby 7s, shooting, squash, table
tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
Britain's best triathletes -- plus other internationals keen on trying out
the course -- will race over Manchester's Commonwealth course in one week,
during the British Triathlon Championships at Salford on 12 August.

WATSON MOVES TO NO 3 IN WORLD TRIATHLON
from Ian Hepenstall
New Zealand triathlete Craig Watson narrowly missed a valiant breakaway that
would have taken him to the top of the world rankings, finally finishing
fifth in the sixth round of the ITU World Cup in Newfoundland last Sunday.
The Christchurch triathlete, who took the bronze medal in this years world
championships in Edmonton, Canada, went clear on the penultimate lap over
the demanding bike course at Cornerbrook.
Victory would have jumped Watson to No 1 in the world rankings, but he was
caught by the pack in the final kilometres and held on for fifth place on
the run, won by Czech Republic’s Martin Krnavek.
Watson’s efforts have secured him No 3 world ranking as the leading Kiwi, a
spot ahead of Hamish Carter who has been world No 1 for most of the last
three years.
Fellow New Zealanders Matt Reed and Nathan Richmond figured prominently,
finishing 14th and 19th respectively while Wellington’s Evelyn Williamson
grabbed ninth place in the women’s race, the same position as last weekend’s
world championships.
Watson and Reed joined the front bunch out of the water, with Richmond
working hard over the testing terrain to catch the leaders on the bike only
to be dropped on the second lap of punishment in the hills.
There were a number of unsuccessful breakaway attempts, including Watson,
who remained clear for over the lap before being caught on the last of six
circuits.
Krnavek, who recovered from a virus that took the edge off his world
championship bid, was the strongest over the long, steep hills on the run,
breaking away from countryman Filip Ospaly with Australian’s world
championship silver medallist Chris Hill finishing third.
The women’s race produced another emphatic performance from American Siri
Lindley, who was clear out of the water with training partner Loretta Harrop
(Australian) and fellow American Barbara Lindquist.
The trio cleared out by over four minutes on the bike with Lindley posting
her fifth victory on the trot ahead of Lindquist and Wieke Hoogzaad.
Williamson was five minutes down on the leaders out of the water and dropped
a further three minutes in an ineffective third chase pack on the bike.
However she showed the benefits of her training at altitude training in
Europe by posting the day’s fourth best run split behind Olympic 10,000m
runner Carol Montgomery, Lindley and Hoogzaad.
The next round of the world cup is in Yamaguchi, Japan on 12 August,
followed by rounds in Switzerland and Hungary before the Goodwill Games in
Brisbane.

FOUR NEW ZEALAND TRIATHLETES INVITED TO GOODWILL GAMES
from Ian Hepenstall, Media Commissioner for Triathlon New Zealand
New Zealand triathlete Hamish Carter faces a battle to recover from injury
in time for September’s Goodwill Games in Brisbane.
Carter, who lost his world No 1 ranking after an achilles tendon injury
relegated him to 46th placing at the world championships in Edmonton, Canada
last weekend, is one of four Kiwi competitors to earn invitations.
He will be joined by world championship bronze medallist Craig Watson
(Christchurch) and the Australian-based pair of Matt Reed and Rina Hill for
the prestige event involving only 25 starters in the men’s and women’s
races.
The invitations include last weekend’s newly crowned world champions Peter
Robertson and Siri Lindley, the Sydney Olympic medallists, the top 12 world
ranked competitors as well as three each from the founding USA and host
Australia, battling for honour and a US$30,000 winner’s purse.
Another Kiwi, Kris Gemmell, formerly from Palmerston North but now training
in Christchurch, heads the stand-by list as the next ranked competitor.

BIKE RACKS WITH A DIFFERENCE
from Bruce Chambers
The Japan Triathlon Union are trialing new style free standing bike racks at
this event. They are similar to those used at the Olympics but have been
refined to make them work better and be easier to assemble. The base has a
pole which carries the national flag and competitors name at the top each
facing each side on separate signs. The pole has two supports to the base
in triangular form to hold firstly the rear wheel and then on bike return
the front wheel. Supports are well padded. As most of the diagram is in
Japanese thats the best I can do in describing it. It was the JTU who
developed the original bike stand of this type and they have now improved
it. What for it if the race appears on TV sport. Race Date 12 August in
Japan.
