Du Tri 1 - round 2 results

Held in perfect conditions over quiet rolling country roads the second Du
Tri 1 Duathlon series race became a start to finish win for Garit Read of
Hamilton. Thames Darren Donnelly attempted to chase Read down during the
cycle but was unable to make inroads into the lead Read established during
the first run. Hamilton's David Bunting was pleased with his return to
racing after fracturing his wrist the day before the NZ Sec Schools
Triathlon champs in March
Gisbornes Michelle Hyland only found competition amongst the men with no
other ladies able to match her superior cycling ability.

2001 ITU Congress

The annual ITU Congress wrapped up in Edmonton yesterday and announced an
exciting addition to the 2002 ITU Triathlon World Championships programme in
Cancun, along with host cities for the 2004 Winter, Long Course and
Triathlon World Championships.

A national teams World Championship will be introduced to the event calendar
in Cancun. Teams of four per nation will be set off at two minute intervals
to complete a sprint distance (750m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run)
triathlon. The first three members of each team qualify for the final result
of the national team.

“Teams triathlon is a really exciting concept,” said Michel Gignoux, ITU
Technical Committee. “The strongest team will start the race last and we won't
know until that team crosses the line who the winner will be. The television
coverage will be dynamic.”

Also decided at the ITU Congress were host cities for 2004 World Championship
events.

The Italian mountain village of Courmayeur will host the 2004 ITU Winter
Triathlon World Championships.

Ibiza, Spain, won the right to host the 2004 World Long Distance
Championships over Sater and will provide exceptional visuals, tourism
opportunities and quality of organisation.

Madeira was the most popular choice for the 2004 ITU World Triathlon
Championships. A three year plan leading into the event, including an
International points race and a World Cup as part of the preparation, to
parallel with an athlete development programme.

It anticipated that the national teams race will be scheduled on the Tuesday
following the individual elite World Title races.

In recognition of ‘tremendous work in the early development of the ITU women
’s committee and then as vice president’ Sarah Springman was honoured by the
ITU Congress.
