Auckland Ambush at Secondary School Duathlon
from Averil West

Aucklanders came to Nelson with the most competitors for Saturday’s National
Secondary School Duathlon Championships and left winning all but one of the
six titles at stake. Garit Read (Fairfield College, Hamilton) shut them out
of a clean sweep taking out the Intermediate (U16) Boys event.

Really keen to do well before he flew out to Canada for the World Triathlon
Championships was Auckland Grammar’s James Elvery in the Senior Boys race,
however his classmate Todd Calkin had other ideas. Both were in transition
together after the initial 3km run along with Tawa’s Sam Mallard who also
had aspirations of colour around his neck at the medal presentations.
Unfortunately though, chasing hard on the first right hand corner of the
cycle leg his bike went one way and he the other, taking out a fence waratah
and a couple of strands of barbed wire. Body beaten but bike unscathed he
was back for the prizegiving to watch Elvery claim the gold medal after a
strong final 4km run which held Calkin out by 54 seconds.

2000 Intermediate title holder, Julia Scopes (Epsom Girls Grammar) was
favoured for the senior title however Sonya Harkness’ (Taradale) superior
cycling ability saw her sweep past as she rode to the ‘max’ on the
challenging course. A handy lead going into the final run looked sufficient
but with duathlon being all about balance, Scopes’ all round ability saw her
regain the lead. Louise Jenkins (Hamilton) relegated a tiring Harkness to
third.

Dunedin’s Sarah Bryant (St Hildas) also had ambitions of stopping the
Auckland dominance in a well supported intermediate girls section. In the
closest finish of the day Jade Gilbertson (Epsom Girls Grammar) withstood
the Otago challenge by a mere 23 seconds with Gisborne Girls High student,
Amykelly Horsfall third.

Rangitoto’s strength in multi-sport will certainly see them shine in the
future with their juniors, Stuart Robinson and Rachael Nordmeyer all smiles
when presented with gold medals in their respective races. Rhys Watkins
(Whakatane) was Robinson’s major threat in the final straight as Andrew
Curtayne (St Kentigern) and Ryan Marshall (Horowhenua) battled it out for
third.

Nordmeyer had a two minute advantage in her victory over Odette Sceats
(Girsborne Girls) and Alexandria Gibson (MacLeans College).

Teams titles were won by Auckland Grammar and Marlborough Girls College, the
criteria being assessed on best placed finishers over all grades.

Multisport legend, Kathy Lynch’s speech was well received at the
prizegiving as she spelt out to the teenage talent to stay with sport when
they enter adult life. When they heard she had her first competitive cycle
at the age of 32, then going on the finish 6th in the Women’s Tour de France
and becoming an Olympic Mountainbiker closer to 40, certainly highlighted
her message of having dreams, setting goals, and being prepared to overcome
barriers with inner strength and not being reliant on others to achieve if
you want success.
