NEW ZEALAND’S REED WINS GERMAN TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP
from Ian Hepenstall
New Zealand triathlete Matt Reed has continued his outstanding form this
year by winning the German championships in Frankfurt on June 10th.
Reed, who moved into the world top 10 this month, held off a strong field
including former Ironman New Zealand champion Lother Leder and Olympic
silver medallist Stefan Vuckovic in a sprint finish.
The Australian-based New Zealander was at the front of the pack out of the
water and in a lead pack throughout the 40km bike. A bunch of five runners,
consisting Leder, Vuckovic, world No 16 Reto Hug (Switzerland), Andreas
Raelert and Reed broke clear early on the run.
Hug and Vuckovic were dropped in the desperate sprint finish with Reed
taking honours by a metre from Leder and Raelert five metres behind.
Results German national triathlon championship, Frankfurt (1.5k swim 40k
bike 10k run):
1 Matt Reed (New Zealand) 1.43.33
2 Lothar Leder (Germany) 1.43.34
3 Andreas Raelert (Germany) 1.43.36

The high profile international triathlon was won by inform Australian Chris
McCormack, who picked up his five major international race of the year ahead
of compatriot Craig Walton with Canada’s Olympic champion Simon Whitfield
third. New Zealand’s Joanna Lawn was 12th in the women’s race won by world
No 1 Michellie Jones (Australia).

KIWIS PIPPED FOR GLORY IN IRONMAN KOREA TRIATHLON
from Ian Hepenstall
New Zealand’s Bryan Rhodes, after leading for most of the day, had to settle
for second place in the Ironman Korea triathlon on the resort island of Jeju
on June 10th. The Taupo triathlete finished ahead of fellow New Zealander
Scott Ballance, with his wife Karyn Ballance third in the women’s race.
Rhodes, who achieved a breakthrough victory in Ironman Malaysia in January,
was second out of the water before building an impressive 10-minute
advantage on the 180km cycle, a circumnavigation of Jeju island. He retained
an eight-minute buffer midway through the 42km marathon before the effects
of the heat took their toll, with Japan’s Yoshinori Tamaru grabbing the lead
5km from the finish.
The Japanese scored his first Ironman victory in 8.41.19, with Rhodes second
seven minutes behind and Ballance a further three minutes down.
Karyn Ballance was forced to play catchup after a show 1hr 11min for the
3.8km swim, trailling leader Raleigh Tennant (Australia) by 13 minutes and
pre-race favourite Belinda Granger (Australia) by 10 minutes out of the
water. The two Australians keyed off each other to stretch their advantage
over the Christchurch triathlete on the bike with Granger too strong in the
closing stages of the run to win in 9.37.20, five minutes back to Tennant
with Ballance a further nine minutes back in third.
Results:
Ironman Korea triathlon, Jeju Island (3.8km swim 180km bike 42km run):
Men:
1 Yoshimori Tamaru (Japan) 8.41.19
2 Bryan Rhodes (New Zealand) 8.48.02
3 Scott Ballance (New Zealand) 8.51.43
Women:
1 Belinda Granger (Australia) 9.37.20
2 Raleigh Tennant (Australia) 9.42.30
3 Karyn Ballance (New Zealand) 9.51.51
Belinda Granger and Raeleigh Tennant have made a history with the first ever
Ironman Triathlon one, two finish by Australian
women.

A NOTE FROM RHODESY
Dear Friends
Hello how are you all? Well I have completed another Ironman and this
one was very hard due to the lack of organisation from the Transition area
to the Aid stations , which were very Bad !!
I tried to do what the Europeans have been doing for a number of years
now and that is to destroy the Feild on the Bike.
My Swim went well as planed the Currents were very strong making for a
longer swim but the new Wetsuit worked very well and I was comfortable the
whole 3.8km's.
I felt really good as soon as I got onto the bike and pushed really hard
and gained 8mins in the first 65km's then I backed of a little and when I
went to get my special needs bag the volunteers had changed the bag to a
supermarket bag and I only got my water bottles and no Powerbars or my
Powergels so I had one Gel to last me 70km's .
That made me take it easier in the last stages of the bike I had really
wanted to push it had in the last 60km's but was worried about blowing up. I
was grabing banana's and anything they had but didn't know if it would help.
I got of the bike with a 12min lead and felt good on the run I tryed hard
to keep my pace even and stay strong. At the first few aid stations they
weren't ready for me and I only got a cup of water with not much in it I
started Yelling at get Bottles at each aid station from then on I also asked
my lead bike to let hem know that I wanted bottles.
Well I got to the 21.1 km mark with a healthy lead still but then the lost
food and nutrition got to me the wheels started to fall off. With 12km's to
go I was having to walk threw aid stations to get coke and water.
Then at 9km's to go I was passed by the Japanese athlete Yoshinori Tanura
who Ran 2.50 the only sub 3 hour Marathon. I Pushed really hard to hold onto
my Second place and was very happy to get over the Finish line as my body
had started to shut down.
Well now I know what I have to do before I get to Hawaii but at least I
know that I will be able to bike with the German Machines.I head to Boulder
CO for altuide trainning now until late September.
Take care all and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours Bryan Rhodes

WILLIAMSON, DOCHERTY IMPRESS IN EUROPEAN TRIATHLON
from Ian Hepenstall
Evelyn Williamson and Bevan Docherty produced strong performances, finishing
second and third respectively in the ITU international triathlon in the
Netherlands on June 4th.
Williamson (Wellington) made a successful return to the international scene
with a strong second placing in the Zundert triathlon, following a month
sidelined with an elbow injury. The Sydney Olympian injured her elbow in a
cycle accident two days before the first ITU World Cup race in Japan in
April, and the ensuing break saw her drop out of the world top 50.
The second placing behind Denmark’s Wieke Hoogzaad, ranked 27th in the
world, should see the Kiwi jump at least 10 spots back into the top 50,
which is the cutoff for automatic qualification for next month’s world
championships in Edmonton.
It is doubly good news for Taupo’s Docherty with his second podium placing
in three weeks, which has seen him rise from 70th on the world rankings into
the top 50.
Five New Zealanders – Hamish Carter, Craig Watson, Matt and Shane Reed and
Kris Gemmell – are currently in the top 50, with six places available for
each country for the world championships. There are four more ITU
international races before the World Cup race in Toronto on July 7, after
which final selections will be determined.
Docherty’s third placing behind Belgium’s former world ironman champion Luc
van Lierde and world No 3 Andrew Johns (Britain) should see the Taupo
athlete rise to as high as 40th when the new rankings are posted next week.
He produced the best run split, a superb 30.54 for 10kms, to slice through
the final to run down a number of top triathletes including world No 2
Dimitry Gaag. His Christchurch-based training partner and world No 21
Gemmell did not finish.
Results:
ITU Zundert International Triathlon (1.5k swim 40k bike 10k run)
Women:
1 Wieke Hoogzaad (Denmark) 2.01.25
2 Evelyn Williamson (New Zealand) 2.02.21
3 Analeah Emmerson (Great Britain) 2.02.50
Men:
1 Luc van Lierde (Belgium) 1.49.43
2 Andrew Johns (Great Britain) 1.49.51
3 Bevan Docherty (New Zealand) 1.49.53

A NOTE FROM EVELYN
Hello all,
must apologise, this has taken a while to fire out but have been beavering
away here trying to settle into new surroundings.
My first race of the European season was in the Netherlands (zundert) last
monday (June 3rd ) - and my first visit to Holland. Due to plane
mechanical difficulties I didn't arrive at the hotel until late the night
before the race and therefore wasn't expecting anything too flash.
Things actually went a lot better than I imagined and after a strong run I
secured 2nd place behind one of Europe's best - Wieke Hoogzard from Holland.
it was interesting being back in a drafting race after racing all through
summer in the traditional non drafting format - certainly makes for better
running off the bike. Form isn't 100% by any means but was more than happy
with how it all felt considering 'everything' that had gone on leading up to
the race.
That night I began my 18hr train journey to the pyranees where I am
currently training at an altitude center. it's an amazing place housing
over 200 athletes and coaches etc and has great facilities. we have a 25m
and 50m indoor pool under the building, access to doctors, massage and 3
buffet meals a day - I may never leave!! There is a vast array of athletes
here at the moment , many are olympic medallists and world champ medallists
so it's reasonably humbling for this kiwi, though nice to have the
experience of rubbing shoulders with a few of them. Gabrielle Szabo (track
runner - Very good!) is here with here coach/husband, doctor, and rabbit
(run partner) so they make quite an entourage.......
Riding is mountainous, in fact I'm still searching for that elusive piece of
flat road - running is very similar so if nothing else I will be able to run
and ride all day up hill at a slow pace!! seriously, it's a great place to
train and also nice to have a change from our Swiss base (St moritz) of the
past 3 years.
Next up is another race in the Netherlands (Nuenen) on the 24th of this
month so will see how the form is after 3 weeks up here.
Will send a report as soon as possible after that.
thanks again for your support.
bye for now
Evelyn Williamson

A NOTE FROM BEVAN
Hello everyone
I’m just writing to let you all know my latest result from the ITU points
race in Zundert, Holland on July 2nd.
Going into this race I had a lot of pressure to perform, as I was in
desperate need to earn World cup points and hold my top 50 World ranking in
order to qualify for Worlds in Canada.
The race started in a little lake situated in Belgium, the bike would then
take us across the border to Holland where we completed 4 laps through the
small town of Zundert, both on the bike and in the run. The swim was a bit
of a fight around a tight 3-lap circuit and I found myself back in the
second group, however the packs soon came together and one group of 50
formed, with champion Iron man Luc Van Lierde and a few others just up the
road.
After the bike we found ourselves 1.30 down, however Trent Chapman and
Dimtry Gaag began to set a good strong pace and we began to run them down.
At 6km on the run I put in a surge to try and shake things up and it worked,
with only Andrew Johns staying with me. We worked well together and with
1500m to go Van Lierde only had a 20 second lead. However he was strong
enough to hold on for the win with Andrew Johns 2nd Just ahead of me.
1 Luc van Lierde BEL 1:49:43
2 Andrew Johns GBR 1:49:51
3 Bevan Docherty NZL 1:49:53
4 Dmitry Gaag KAZ 1:50:00
5 Trent Chapman AUS 1:50:08
