KIWI GETS SECOND IN MADERIA
from Bevan Docherty

Just to let you know that I did the ITU points race in Maderia last weekend.
I had a good strong race in Maderia, finishing 2nd to Carl Blasco in a very
tight spring finish. A group of 6 of us got away on the bike including
Blasco and Spencer Smith. Smith dropped back to the second group after
suffering a mechanical problem with his bike. It was always going to come
down to the run as Blasco and I ran shoulder to shoulder the whole way
setting up an exciting dash for the line. Unfortunately Blasco had the
quicker legs on the day and crossed the line 1 second in front.

I was still happy with my performance, and now look towards my next race in
Forte de Marmi, Italy this weekend.

KIWI GETS SECOND IN ST KITTS
Matt Reed also earned some useful ITU ranking points when he finished second
in the St Kitts international triathlon in the Carribean over last weekend.
The lanky Queensland-based Kiwi was beaten by top Czechoslovakian
representative martin Krnavek, who was 13th at the Sydney Olympics.

Reed clocked 2.11.59 in hot conditions over the Olympic distance to finish
1min 30sec clear of American Abe Rogers.

Fellow Kiwi Stephen Sheldrake (Gisborne), building up for his major aim of
the world Ironman championships in Kona in October, finished a strong sixth,
a minute clear of Aucklander Peter Clode with Tauranga’s Dean Jagusch 20th.
Ironman New Zealand champion Cameron Brown did not finish after feeling ill
on the bike, as did Ironman Malaysia winner Bryan Rhodes, both suffering
after last weekend’s demanding half Ironman at St Croix in the Virgin
Islands.

KIWIS GET SECOND, SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH IN NOUMEA

Shane Reed, brother of Matt, finished second to outstanding French prospect
Laurent Jeanselme, while Waikanae’s Evelyn Williamson finishes second in the
women’s race.

It was a morale boosting performance for Williamson in her first competition
since injuring an elbow in a crash leading up to the first round of the ITU
World Cup in Japan last month. She finished a minute behind talented young
Australian Nikki Egyed, and ahead of fellow New Zealanders Heather Evans and
her older sister Megan Hall, both of Wellington.
After missing the first five rounds of the world cup, Williamson will now
have to reset her sights on the next round in Toronto on July 7. Her ranking
has dropped to 49 and she may drop out of the crucial top 50 following the
weekend, below the cut for automatic qualification for the world
championships in Edmonton, Canada two weeks following the Toronto race.

HELLEMANS ON WATSON
from Christchurch Press article May 15th

Craig Watson could surpass Hamish Carter as New Zealand's top triathlete
this year, according to John Hellemans, Watson's training adviser.

Watson, the highest placed of New Zealand's three triathletes at last year's
Sydney Olympics, had his first World Cup win at Rennes, France, last weekend
He beat Andrew Johns of Great Britain by 15 seconds and finished ahead of
some accomplished triathletes including the world's second ranked competitor
Dimitry Gaag of Kazakstan, and Ivan Rana of Spain.

Watson of Christchurch -- who was ranked seventh before the race -- will
move further up the ladder after the win.

``This win is a long time coming,'' said Hellemans. ``It will not be a
surprise to a few insiders because Craig has been so close to a win so many
times.

``He deserves it. He works so hard. He is very diligent and has been
improving and improving every year. It's fantastic.

``I think he is on the way to being our top dog -- to surpassing Hamish
Carter (still ranked No 1 in the world). He has had better results over the
last year or so.''

Hellemans said the 29-year-old had a tremendous work ethic, which was his
big strength.

Watson's first place follows a second by 2sec to Rana in the Ishigaki World
Cup race in Japan last month, and a seventh in Gamagori, Japan two weeks
ago.

PARKSEY WORKS WONDERS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS
An extract from a note from Blair Brinkley on Kiwi Graham Park

After just five weeks of training with Graham Park, we sent a squad of 17
athletes to St Anthony's triathlon for a bit of test run in our build up to
the Worlds in July. Despite an intense load over the previous 5 weeks with
Graham and very little in the way of a taper, all but two of the development
squad managed personal best times. Over the previous years Cayman had
only managed one top ten placing in any age group and this year we managed
to secure a total of 6 top ten placings including two less than a minute
outside of the top ten overall. We are very happy with the results and
look forward to the next couple of months of focussed training under
Graham's guidance, and what it will bring. He has certainly done more
for our athlete development program in five weeks then we have been able to
achieve over the last couple of years.
