KIWI WINS LATEST WORLD CUP
Cantabrian Craig Watson has won his first ITU World Cup Triathlon in Rennes
France. Watson's win was in front of an estimated 30,000 crowd of
spectators.
Little separated the field of 73 athletes during the swim. A breakaway
group of 16 cycled to a 2 minute lead into the second transition. The lead
group included Craig Watson (NZL), Frederic Belaubre (FRA), Ivan Rana (ESP),
Reto Hug (SWI), Kris Gemmell (NZL), Trent Chapman (AUS) and the French
Bignet brothers. It was Ukrainian Andrey Glushenko, who led the riders into
the second transition.
Glushenko, Watson, Hug, Gemmell and Chapman started well in the run, with
Spain’s Rana making up ground with every stride. However the pace soon took
its toll on Gemmell and Glushenko as they fell off the pace - leaving a
leading pack comprising Hug, Watson, Johns, Poulat and Rana with a
stranglehold on the final lap.
Watson eventually finished a comfortable winner, with Andrew Johns claiming
second for Britain. Hug beat off a late challenge from
Rana to take third.
American Siri Lindley won the women's event ahead of Michelle Dillion (GBR).
Third went to German Joelle Franzmann.
