YOUNG KIWI TRIATHLETE WINS OCEANIA TITLE
from Ian Hepenstall

Auckland's Terenzo Bozzone has won the Oceania junior triathlon title in
Mooloolaba on Australia's Sunshine Coast on Sunday. The remarkable
15-year-old put paid to a talented field of Australia's best under-20
triathletes with a superb performance, clearing out with 2km remaining on
the run.

Bozzone highlighted a strong day for New Zealand triathletes, with fellow
Aucklander Debbie Tanner finishing fourth in the junior women's race.
Bozzone found a valuable ally in training partner Kieran Doe who worked the
young Aucklander through the bike field to be in contention on the run.
Doe, suffering from a foot injury, worked to help Bozzone who then unleashed
an outstanding run to beat off Australia's top rating juniors Glen Barltrop
and Jacob Newell on the 10km run.

Tanner also produced a strong performance, holding third place for much of
the run until she was pipped by Australian Annabel Luxford in the final 2km.

Two tough World Cup races in Japan took their toll on world No 1 Hamish
Carter who finished 10th in the elite men's race won by inform New
Zealand-born Australian Chris McCormack.

Carter was in the chase pack that caught a breakaway involving Kiwi Shane
Reed on the bike, but did not have the legs over the run to finish in
1.54.06m two minutes behind McCormack.

``It proved one big race too much at this stage of the season. I was hoping
my legs would freshen up and I felt okay until halfway through the run when
my legs felt dead,'' Carter said.

``I'm quite confident though that I am in reasonable shape and with 11 weeks
until the world championships, I think I am on the right track.''
Reed faded badly on the run to finish 30th.

The women's race was won by world champion Nicole Hackett who outsprinted
1999 world champion and fellow Australian Loretta Harrop.

New Zealand representative Rina Hill, who finished third, gained many
plaudits as she stopped to help the struggling Australian Melissa Aston
across the line. Aston was in difficulty in the hot conditions, stumbling
near the finish line when Hill stopped and helped her to the finish, winning
the plaudits of spectators and officials. Australian-based Wellingtonians
Heather Evans and sister Megan Hall finished seventh and 10th respectively.

CROWD's DARLING
from Tri Update reader Richard Evans

I was right next to the spot where Melissa Ashton first started falling
about 50 metres from the end of the elite womens' race. It was reminiscent
of NZ walker Craig Barrett at the 98 Commonwealth Games. As an onlooker you
feel so helpless and can only wish for the athlete to make it to the end.
She had gone very white and showed incredible drive to keep picking herself
up off the tar and trying to get there. I was very impressed when Rina Hill
stopped and helped Melissa through to the finish line. She never hesitated
to think about it but swept her up and they both staggered to the finish
line. Rina was the "darling" of the crowd for this selfless act and received
more cheers than the winner! She is a great athlete. There was a good photo
of the two over the line on the front page of the "Sunshine Coast Daily" for
30 April.

Interestingly enough Rina still did the fastest run in the womens' race.

footnote
Ashton was subsequently disqualified for outside assistance. As well as
assistance from Hill a medical official also went to Ashton's aid despite
Ashton asking to be left alone.
