TriUpdate 259: Reed second at World Cup opener - 17 Apr 2001
KIWIS MAKE STRONG START TO WORLD CUP TRIATHLON from Tri NZ Media Commissioner Ian Hepenstall Queensland-based Matt Reed led home a strong Kiwi charge in the opening round of the ITU World Cup in Japan yesterday. Reed was edged out of his first world cup victory in a desperate sprint with the New Zealand-born Australian Chris McCormack at Gamagori in northern Japan. World No 1 Hamish Carter retained his position after finishing an encouraging sixth, one place ahead of New Zealand team-mate Craig Watson of Christchurch. Two Japanese, Tsukasa Hirano and Hirokatsu Tayama out of the water along with Carter, Kiwi Shane Reed and Frenchman Laurent Jeanselme. Watson, McCormack, inform Australian Chris Hill and Carter led a bunch of 15 after the first of eight laps on the bike. The major move came midway through the bike leg with Watson and Matt Reed broke clear, joined on the following lap by McCormack. Watson was dropped with training partners McCormack and Reed pushing out to a 1min 10sec advantage off the bike. They remained clear over the 10km run with McCormack managing the better in the final sprint to grab the victory, his second at Gamagori after winning there two years ago. Carter was delighted with his sixth placing, only 20 seconds off the third placed Tim Don (Great Britain) in his first major race, while Watson held on for a useful seventh place. American Laura Reback upset predictions to outdistance world champion Australians Nicole Hackett and Loretta Harrop to win the women’s race. New Zealand-aligned Australian Rina Hill placed fifth with Wellington’s Evelyn Williamson 12th. The second round of the ITU World Cup is in Ishigaki, southern Japan this coming weekend. Based at Logan Park High School the 5km Run, 20km Cycle and 2.5km Run event was held in fine windless conditions, over an undulating course. Otago dominated the first run with Eddie Smith and Dougal Thorburn breaking clear and leading out onto the cycle. Victoria Beck also from Otago led the women through onto the cycle. Ingrid Thorburn from Canterbury over took Victoria Beck on the cycle to lead out of the second transition. The rest of the women also closed up to all finish the cycle close together. Dougal Thorburn and Eddie Smith continued their domination of the event by finishing the cycle over 5min clear of the rest of the field. During the second run the strong runners put the pressure on and Eddie Smith pulled away from Dougal to become the 2001 NZ University Duathlon Champion. Victoria Beck closed up on Ingrid Thorburn to make it a close finish, with Ingrid Thorburn holding onto the lead and becoming the 2001 NZ University Duathlon Champion. Aquathon On Sunday 15th April, 11 competitors started the Usit Beyond Travel 2001 NZ University Games Aquathon. Based at Dunedin’s Moana Pool the 5km Run and 400m Swim event was dominated by yesterday’s winner Eddie Smith. Challenged on the run by Glynn Hadley from Canterbury who entered the transition area seconds ahead of Eddie Smith. Eddie Smith’s experience at transitions saw him enter the pool significantly ahead. With his superior swim speed he continued to pull ahead of the field to win by nearly 3minutes. In the women’s race Caroline Owen from Massey lead from start to finish beating Kirsten Bond from Otago. Dion Jelley from AUT had a strong run and swim to move into second place, ahead of Lewis Kaye from Otago. Multisport Athlete's that competed in both the Duathlon and Aquathon had their times combined to determine the 2001 NZ University's Multisport Champion, with his strong showing in both races Eddie Smith with easily the victor in the Male division ahead of Dion Jelley and Glynn Hadley from Canterbury. Otago's Olivia Maclaren was the only female strong enough to compete in both. Top Multisport University With Otago athlete's dominating the field Otago accrued more points (97) than the other University's combined. There was a close race for the next three places with Canterbury (31) in second, Massey (20) third and AUT who only had one athlete in forth with 17 points. -------------------------------------------------------------------- BRENDON DOWNEY UPDATE Brendon is now the Manager of the Sports Science & Medicine Clinic at the Sports Super Centre on the Gold Coast of Australia. ( Rod Cedaro is no longer working from the facility.) Brendon has just launched my his web site www.brendondowney.com which has some interesting articles about training and competing. He intends to add a lot more in the coming months. Also remember the article about Cameron Brown using the Alto2lab in training for Ironman NZ well Brendon is the inventor of the alto2lab. more info on portable, affordable altitude training in your own home at www.alto2lab.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- IRONMAN ASIA ENTRY CUT OFF EXTENDED from Nick Munting The second annual Ironman Asia Triathlon is scheduled for Jeju Island off the southern mainland of Korea on June 10. With $US50,000 in prize money, 70 qualifying slots for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii next October and an entry cut off date extended to May 15th, 2001. The unique 3.8km swim (the entire distance is both roped and buoyed!) is in an ocean that is both temperate and smooth, the round island 180km bike ride simply has to be ridden to be believed - it's simply the best - and the new 42km marathon run course is flat. The combination adds up to a smooth, ultra-fast race with precision organization. For further details go to the web site at www.ironmanasia.com
