TriUpdate 258: NZSS Tri Champs results - 10 Apr 2001
WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS RADIO NIGHT Don't forget Radiosport's weekly round up of triathlon and multisport action at 8pm every Wednesday evening. Great report on the growth of multisport and adventure racing last week. What will be covered this week ? Tune into Radiosport to find out. -------------------------------------------------------------------- SCHOOLS TRI CHAMPS DECIDED from TriNZ Executive member Barry Larsen Secondary Schools Triathlon Champs Picton 8 April 2001. The Bozzone brothers Terenzo and Dino were outstanding winners of their age groups at the Orca sponsored National Triathlon Champs raced in ideal conditions at Picton on Sunday. Rangitoto College, the emerging force in college Triathlon and Multisport, were denied a clean sweep of the boys events when Ben Kindred was out run by Fairfield College’s Garet Reid in the Intermediate Boys event. The Senior event developed into a great race as Bozzone, Auckland Grammar’s James Elvery and Luke Hoetjes from Christchurch Boys began the 5.2 k run together. Bozzone, as he has done locally all summer, bolted clear in the first kilometer and his 15min 52 sec run split ensured victory by over a minute and half from Elvery. Fast finishing Sam Mallard from Tawa College came through to take third place late in the run. Both Bozzone and Elvery are part of a strong NZ junior team to compete in the Oceania Triathlon Champs in Moloolaba, Australia on the 29 April. The Senior Girls title went to Taradales Sonya Harkness who held on to a big lead off the bike to shut out Julia Scopes, the current Auckland champion from Epsom Girls. Scopes had to come from a long way back after exiting the chilly waters of Picton Sound in 6th place. Clare Fraser from St Marys in Wellington held onto third place after leading out of the water. The importance of the run leg was again evident in the Intermediate Girls event when Northerners Amy-kelly Horsfall, Gisborne Girls High, Jade Gilbertson, Epsom, and Seah Martin, Diocesan, were run down by Dunedin’s Sarah Bryant who made up a large deficit to win going away. The Intermediate Boys race had a similar result when the leading four of Reid, Kindred, St Paul’s Waikatos, Caleb Hill and Northcote College’s Ben Logan set out on the run locked together. As Reid, fresh from a solid 3k behind Bozzone at last weeks North Island track champs, ran away, Kindred worked hard to stay ahead of Hill. While the younger Dino Bozzone was an impressive all the way winner in the Junior Boys event, the Junior Girls title was won in a similar fashion by Hosanna Horsfall from Gisborne Girls. Rangitoto were convincing winners of the boys team trophy from Auckland Grammar and St Kentigens while the local team from Marlborough College won the girls title. The Games involves a number of sports from traditional like rugby and netball, to Ultimate Frisbee and Shooting. The multisport community is represented by duathlon and aquathon. The duathlon is held on Saturday morning over a 5km/20km/2.5km undulating course. Close competition is expected between Otago’s top triathlete Eddie Smith and some of the regions top multisporters Tony Dey and Richard Greer. The women’s duathlon race is wide open. With a field of over 30 competitors from, as far a field as Tamaki in Auckland some unknown athletes will show through. Sunday morning's Aquathon combines a 5km run followed by a 400m swim. A smaller field probably due to the hydrophobic abilities of duathletes and multisporters. Expect a top race with Eddie Smith as favourite for the men’s race. The USIT Beyond Travel 2001 NZ University Games Multisport Champions will be the athletes with the fastest combined time for both the duathlon and aquathon. The top Multisport Campus will be decided on the fastest combined times for two males and one female in each race. This is shaping up to be a tight competition between Canterbury, Massey and Otago Universities, who have all got large teams. The Multisport event organiser Ray Boardman is impressed with the number of entries. "Originally we were working on having 20 people tops to each event but we have already got 29 competitors with a number of campuses still to confirm numbers." -------------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING RACES IN WELLINGTON REGION from Michael Jacques Wellington Duathlon Champs on 29 April at Upper Hutt CIT.
