Christchurch's John Newsom finished 16th overall at Ironman South Africa
last weekend in 9 hours 26 minutes

IRONMANOZ IS GO
Minolta Ironman Australia takes place this weekend.

Normally a lot of kiwis head across the Tasman with at least a few Pro's to
fly the Kiwi flag high. This year however we have just 6 age groupers
racing. This may be a reflection on the success of Taupo as a venue, it
also reflects how hard it now is to get a start in Aussie with their
qualifying race series.

Kiwi Age Groupers are
Jaquie Bay
Nick Bradford-James
Harvard Daniels
Roger Levie
Russell Troy
Dot Williams

We wish them all a great race

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS TRIATHLON CHAMPS PREVIEW
from Paul Kendrick

There are over 100 entries for the weekend, the course is a little different
to what most Tri people, do in NZ

It is a multi lap swim 250metres per lap with a 15 metre run at the end of
each lap, 2 laps for junior/intermediate age groups ad 3 laps for senior.
Cycle consists of 2 laps of either 8km for the younger classes or 10km for
seniors, again they return to the transition are at the completion of each
lap

The run is 1.3 km per lap, juniors will do 2 laps, intermediates 3 laps, and
seniors 4 laps.

The seniors are therefore racing a true sprint distance. Each lap brings
competitors back to the foreshore or London quay wich is all closed off, so
they get to run through the crowd etc

Senior race boys will be a good one, terenzo bozzone is racing up from
intermediate and will have a good race with sam mallard from wellington,
callum millward from napier, luke hotjes from christchurch and defending
intermediate champ from last year james elvery from auckland.

Senior girls should be between julia scopes, fiona loan, with a good tussle
also between clare fraser, kew kendrick and emma lowther.

The intermeadiate fields are well subcsribed with a big classes and many
unknowns so picking winners and placings is always a lottery

Number of entries by category
Snr Boys 15
Snr Girls 11
Int Boys 34
Int Girls 20
Jnr Boys 15
Jnr Girls 6
A small but quality fields.

NELSON WOMEN'S ONLY TRI
from Averil West

145 starters in Sundays 14th Taylors Footwear City of Nelson Women's
Triathlon which was won by Claire Doris followed by Gaye Evans and Rachel
Thomas-Ladley.

Half the field opted for the initial 3km walk instead of running 5km and
Maryanne Omlo lead them home with Maree Holland and last years winner Adi
Coventry-Brown close behind.

Another feature was that almost half the field hadn't previously competed in
a triathlon.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

BLUE LAKE MULTISPORT WEEKEND March 24-25th
from Dave Joy

The weekend at Rotorua’s Blue Lake comprised of three events:
The Orca Aquathon (6km run and 800m swim)
The Orca Lake Swim (2km)
The PINS Cycles (Rotorua) Sprint Triathlon (750m swim, 18km cycle and 6km
run).
The Aquathon and swim on the Saturday and Triathlon on the Sunday, the Tri
also had a 2km kayak option instead of the swim.

Although numbers were down on previous years, possibly due to changing the
date from Auckland Anniversary weekend, there was still a wide range of
abilities taking part in all three events, the Tri having 53 entries.
In the Female section all three events were dominated and won by Michelle
Hyland, she also took out the Queen of the Lake title, winning by 25 minutes
from Rotoura’s Pam Dickson.

The male section was also dominated by one athlete, Garit Read, but he did
not have his own way in all three races. He was a overall winner in both the
Aquathon and the Tri, but was beaten into second place in the swim by Scott
Donaldson, who won by 2 minutes. Garit also won the King of the Lake title.

A GREAT DAY FOR A GUTBUSTER
by Paul Deuritz

What a fantastic day it was- ideal weather conditions, great countryside
with mountain views, exciting racing and perfect organisation left nothing
to be desired.

In a nutshell, this was the 2001 Furlong Motor Inn Rotorangi Gutbuster,
which was held on a new and improved course. The 14km kayak (the same as
last years 16km course but measured correctly using GPS) and the same
undulating 12km cross-country run was followed by a new 45km very hilly
cycle with the finish in Hawera. For the first time a corporate/club team
category was also successfully introduced.

After a week of much desired rain, South Taranaki put on an exceptionally
calm but cool morning, and perfect blue sky - what more could you ask for on
race day?

Entry numbers were up by more than 50% this year-a huge increase to previous
years thanks to the endless hours of organisational work put in by race
organisers Rachel Pannett and Mark Anderson and their team.

After no female individual competitors last year, 7 keen women lined up this
year to ‘battle’ it out in ‘Taranaki’s toughest’.Susan Chambers from Bell
Block showed a gutsy race leading from start to finish to take line honours
in a time of 4:25,31 hours closely followed by Sara Macdonald and Rachel
Bettie, both from Auckland, crossing the line in 4:27,19 hours and 4:29,22
hours respectively. Only 6 minutes separated the first 4 women.

In contrast 19 minutes ticked by between the 1st and 4th in the individual
man’s race. The big question was "would Al Cross from Wellington be able to
pull back in the run and the cycle the time he would loose to Daniel Bush in
the kayak leg?" Daniel Bush, an outstanding paddler from Palmerston North
however dominated the race from start to finish and there was never any
doubt that he would take out this event. In the end he was 12 minutes clear
of 2nd Al Cross, who managed to pull 2 minutes back on the hilly cross
country run however dropped another 7 minutes back during the ‘gutbusting’
ride.

Many signs put up along the road tried to keep athletes encouraged by
pointing out great mountain views or that the last hill was just being
conquered.

Bryan Hickling- a young and promising athlete from New Plymouth surprised
with a 3rd place in 3:43,34 hours. He is certainly an athlete to watch out
for in the future, especially as his cycling continues to improve.

The veteran man title went to Grant Hildred from New Plymouth in 3:51,03
hours thanks to a consistent performance in all three legs and to a swim of
2nd placed Frank ‘Fast’ Hoffman at the first turnaround buoy. To help him
during similar mishaps in the future he was awarded the Waitara Canoe Club
snorkel. The prize giving was ‘short and sweet’ and Rachel entertained the
crowd with hilarious jokes of monks and unusual guide dogs during the odd
wait.

The fastest time of the day went to a two person team of Peter O’Sullivan
and Lynch from Palmerston North in outstanding 3:13,36 hours. Peter O as
most people know him, also took fastest kayak and cycle times. First mixed
team was a local Hawera team with Richard Brewer, their runner, completing
the run in the fastest time of the day (43:23min). The fastest women’s run
went to Vanessa Green who paired up with Anne McKeagg (both from Palmerston
North) to win the women’s team category in a time of 3:48:06. Anne McKeagg
also had the fastest women’s kayak and cycle times. The Old & Reckless from
New Plymouth won the Corporate/Club category in 3:45,15 hours.

Most competitors would agree that the Furlong Motor Inn Rotorangi Gutbuster
is one of the best Multisport events in NZ in terms of ‘value for money’.
Not only does a $30 entry fee give you the satisfaction (at least after the
race) to complete one of the best organised, toughest short course

Multisport events in New Zealand while enjoying magic mountain views, but
also the certainty of walking home with one of many useful merit or spot
prices. And all that after catching up with friends over a delicious buffet
meal.

We certainly saw many happy faces leave South Taranaki.

NEW ZEALAND SWIM/RUN CHAMPS:
from Craig Browne

For the first time in its nine years, the Orca New Zealand Swim/Run
Championships on March 27 were shifted beyond Auckland to Orewa Beach, one
of New Zealand's finest beaches. Orewa Beach is hosting a weeklong
festival of sport with this event one of the highlights. With the two-mile
expanse of sand and the warm, clear waters of the Pacific Ocean, the
organisers were able to set a course that highlighted this spectacular
setting -- with the entire run on the sand.

Brent Foster first won this title back in 1994 and had gained a hattrick
(winning three times) over the past three years. He opened up a one-minute
lead on his fellow surf lifesaving aficionados, Adam Jackson and Ariki
Pearson, during the 1500m swim. He was on his own for the run, too, as he
won his fifth championship title. Pearson took second ahead of Mark
Hutchinson, the New Zealand marathon champ, who, not surprisingly, clocked
the fastest run split.

Evelyn Williamson won this title in 1999, and Kirsty Whiting was the champ
last season, and they were picked to fight it out for the honours this time.
Heading out onto the 6km run, they had Miriam Barlow in contact but by
run's end it was all Williamson. Samantha Warriner's smart run overhauled
Miriam Barlow for third.
