Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro Tour
from Ken Maclaren
Series wrapped up with new winners.........

Nathan Richmond and Evelyn Williamson had won the first five rounds of the
six race Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro Tour and in doing so both became the
inaugural series winners with maximum points. Both elected to give the final
race a miss and were at Maraetai as supporters and spectators for the final
event.

The only thing certain therefore, was that would be two new winners. In the
event it was a couple of South African imports who seized the initiative and
took the wins. Rangitoto College student Terenzo Bozzone, at sixteen the
youngest man in the field, has been in new Zealand with his family for
several years now. The youngster seized his opportunity making a spirited
burst away from the twelve man lead bunch that came into the second
transition together, leading out the charge on the 5km run leg Bozzone
showed a racing maturity way beyond his years. His rivals were left in his
wake and such was the pace on that he was able to come home with a 45 second
lead over second place Kieran Doe. "I was thinking all week how well these
guys were going," said a delighted Bozzone at the finish, "then on Friday I
realised that I could win here and worked out how to do it. It’s been a
great series and I’ve enjoyed being part of it."

In the women’s race Linley Smith who like Bozzone originates from South
Africa, carried out a race plan almost identical to the men’s winner
attacking hard at the start of the run and having simply too much pace for
the rest of the field. "This has been my first triathlon season in New
Zealand," said Smith who has been in the country less than a year, "but it
has been a wonderful welcome to the country and the sport." Paying tribute
to the more than three hundred competitors who took part in the RoadHouse
age group event held alongside the Air New Zealand professional tour, Smith
added, "The whole field in these events has been so friendly, it’s a tribute
to the sport and the people who take part, I’ll be back."

Although the top spots were sown up before the start of this final round
everything else was up for a grabs and at the end of the day it was
consistency which won the day, with Kieran Doe, Brent Foster Linley Smith
and Vanessa Palmer, joining the two winners as podium placers in the series
awards.

KIWI INVENTION HELPS BROWN WIN IRONMAN TITLE
from Ian Hepenstall

Auckland triathlete Cameron Brown used his secret weapon for his
breakthrough victory in Ironman New Zealand at Taupo earlier this month.

Brown, who became only the second Kiwi male to win the event in its 17 year
history, had successfully used the new Alto2Lab personal altitude training
system to build up for the event.

The 28-year-old, who had four podium finishes in international Ironman
events over the past two years, called on the help of former world Ironman
champion, Scott Molina.

The American, married to Kiwi sporting icon Erin Baker, made some drastic
changes to Brown’s training regime, significantly increasing his training
miles and adding weight sessions for the first time.

Brown incorporated eight weeks of weight training, increasing his running
from 100km to a peak of 140km a week and bike miles from 500km to 900km per
week. Adding to his usual five swim sessions each week, Brown peaked at 38
hours of actual training in his Ironman preparations.

``It was such a big increase in training miles that I was concerned at
first,’’ Brown said.

``I was approached by Alto2Lab last year and was impressed with the theory
behind it. I knew the people involved and was keen to train with the system.

``I have trained at altitude in the past and know of its benefits. I am away
from home a long time with my racing, and I did not want to spend more time
away from my wife and family.

``I also have some loyal training partners here in Auckland who are
important to my preparation.

``Alto2Lab has been the perfect answer. I’ve been able to stay in New
Zealand to train and fit in the altitude sessions into my day.

``My haematocrit (oxygen-carrying red cell level) levels rose, as has been
my previous experience with altitude training. I have no doubt that it was
the Alto2Lab system that enabled me to handle the big increase in training
workload.

``It also helped me recover from the hard sessions which was critical.’’

A typical course on the Alto2Lab consists of one hour a day for 15 days.

Brown, who leaves shortly for racing in the United States and Europe in his
buildup to the Ironman world championships in Hawaii, plans to take his
Alto2Lab unit with him to mesh into his training routine.
