RHODSEY CLAIMS IRONMAN FIRST IN HIS BIRTHDAY WISH COME TRUE
from Ian Hepenstall
Taupo’s Bryan Rhodes is claiming an historic first with his victory in
Ironman Malaysia triathlon in Langkawi yesterday.
Rhodes, who celebrated his first ironman triumph on the day of his 28th
birthday, believes he is the first triathlete to win an ironman from start
to finish.
He became only the second Kiwi male to win an ironman title since
Christchurch’s Scott Ballance won Ironman New Zealand in Auckland in 1994.
``As far as I am aware, it is the first time in any official ironman race
that someone has led right from the gun to the end. I broke the line in the
swim and no-one passed me all day,’’ Rhodes said. ``I am bloody sore today.
That was the hottest and toughest conditions I have ever encountered.’’
Temperatures soared to 38C degrees and 90 per cent humidity as the Kiwi held
off the challenge from German superstar Lothar Leder to win in 8:43.54.
``I had eight minutes of Lothar going on to the run and he had chopped out
nearly half of that by the time I reached the 20km mark, so I was a bit
worried.
``I knew I had been running really well back home but the heat was so
stifling, and there was not enough aid stations.
``I decided to break things down on the run, like get to the sports centre
in the middle of the town, then to the bridge further on and kept on like
that. In the end I held Lothar at over four minutes for about 15kms and he
only closed in the final bit.
``I am absolutely elated. It is just starting to sink in what I have
achieved. Wow, I’m finally a champion. It’s hard to believe. And to beat
someone of Lothar’s calibre is fantastic.’’
It is the Kiwi’s second podium performance in an ironman following his third
placing in Ironman Canada in 1999. He was fourth in Ironman California last
year, fourth at Canada in 1997 and sixth at Taupo last year.
Leder, the first man to go under the eight-hour barrier for the ironman, won
the super-slick Ironman Europe in Germany last year and was fourth in the
world championships in Hawaii. The German won Ironman New Zealand in 1997.
Rhodes led South African Glen Gore by a few seconds after the 3.8km swim in
Malacca Straights and steadily built a lead with a solo ride. He led another
South African Raynard Tissink by two minutes following the 180km cycle, with
a further five minutes back to Australian Jason Shortis with Leder lurking a
further minute down.
The German, an outstanding runner, closed to within 4mins 30sec of the lead
at the halfway mark on the 42km marathon run but the New Zealander held him
off with a strong effort in the middle stages to win by 3min 30secs.
Tissink held on for third ahead of Canada’s Garret MacFadyen and Gore.
Rhodes produced a superbly consistent display with the day’s quickest swim
(48.46), the third best bike (4hr48min) and third quickest run (3hr 07min).
He will take a break before preparations for the Air New Zealand Ironman in
Taupo on Saturday 3 March.
``I feel wonderful. I am pretty sore today but I believe I can recover in
time to give Taupo a really good shot.’’
Malaysia proved the lucky 13 for Rhodes, who has been in the sport for 13
years and completed his first victory in his 13th attempt at the ironman
distance.
It proved an outstanding day for New Zealand age-groupers with Roger
Mortimer (Auckland) finishing in a magnificent 14th place overall. Mortimer,
a ken ironman, is perhaps better known as manager of triathlete Hamish
Carter and Olympic cyclist Sarah Ulmer and is one of the country’s most
noted sports agents. He finished second in his age-group in 10:08.42 to earn
a qualifying spot for Kona, Hawaii.
Fellow Aucklanders Quinny Quin placed 21st overall and fifth in the 25-29
years age-group in 10:26.34, Mark Little (Ironman New Zealand sponsor from
Scott USA and New Zealand distributor for PB Nutrition) was 25th overall and
fifth in the 30-34 years age-group in 10:44.48 while Stephen Farrell was
32nd in 10:53.13.
The women’s title resulted in an upset with brilliant Canberra athlete
Belinda Cheney out-distancing world ironman champion Natascha Badmann
(Switzerland). Cheney also led out of the water and was never headed with
the day’s fastest swim (51.33), fastest bike (5:16.52) and fastest run
(3:35.47) to head Badmann by 13 minutes.

A WORLD FIRST
Bryan Rhodes believes that he may have accomplished a world first by leading
an Ironman from start to finish. Has this feat ever been accomplished
before ? If so by whom and when ? Against what strength of opposition ?
Can you help put some light on this matter ?
It has been suggested that Dave Scott may have achieved this in the very
very early days of Hawaii but to date we have been unable to substantiate
this.
A world first or not Rhodesy has done himself proud with a resounding
victory against some stiff competition on a day when none of the Aussie
Pro's made top 5.

EXPOZAY WOMENS TRIATHLON
from Jeremy Boase
Canadian elite athlete Donna Phelan interrupted her holiday to comfortably
win Monday’s Expozay Women’s Triathlon at Mount Maunganui. Showing
devastating running ability, Phelan won in 32 minutes and 3 seconds,
narrowly missing Cindy Taylor’s long standing race record. Second overall,
and winner of the 30-39 age-group, was Marina Fowell from Whakatane. Last
year’s winner, Tanya-Lee Parker (Rotorua) was third overall, and Taylor, the
2000 runner-up, was fourth overall and winner of the 40-49 age group.
With the competitors starting the first swim leg in age-group waves, it was
juniors Seah Martin (Auckland) and Phillippa Jensen (Mount Maunganui) who
were first from the water. While Martin continued to hold the advantage
during the bike leg, it was Phelan, clearly the best runner on the day, who
made up the two minute wave delay to win the race to the line, tacking with
it overall and age-group (20-29) honours.
Martin completed the run ahead of Sophie Hart and Welcome Bay’s Moira
Kilpatrick to win the under 19 age group, while Tauranga’s Iris Thomas won
the 50-59 age group and Raewyn Eagles was first of the 60 plus athletes to
complete the course.
With a total of 383 entries, an increase of over 70 compared with last year,
organisers were delighted with the turnout. Race Director Ken Knott was
particularly pleased with the large number of first-time entrants. Knott
said that over 150 women completed their first triathlon on Monday, each of
whom has set and matched a personal goal.
Many of these novices have benefited from coaching clinics run on a
Wednesday evening at Pilot Bay by Triathlon Tauranga. These clinics will now
continue to help people, including many of Monday’s first-timers, to prepare
for the Unichem Bayfair Pharmacy Triathlon in March
Results
1 Donna Phelan 32.03
2 Marina Fowell 33.30
3 Tanya-Lee Parker 33.39
4 Cindy Taylor 33.54
5 Sandra Boubee 34.54
6 Seah Martin 34.57

STANDARD COURSE NATIONALS LOOM CLOSE
from Matt Lock
The Tararua Festival of Triathlon including the Standard Course National
Champs is less than four weeks away. With many of New Zealand's top
triathletes in the country including, Brown, Bright, Docherty, Carter, and
Sheldrake, speculation is mounting as to who will front on Napier's
Westshore Beach on February 17. With TriNZ adopting the policy of our elite
athletes needing to qualify for National teams on home soil, there is good
reason for the elite ranks to race. With the race format being non-drafting
the champs could work to establish who is New Zealand's strongest triathlete
across the three disciplines.
The festival weekend runs Thursday 15th February to Sunday 18th February.
The event includes a Pasta Party, National Champs, Prizegiving Party,
Sanitarium Beach Breakfast, and a fun, pot luck/ family teams tri. For more
information visit

Event Manager Matt Lock says, "We are planning a great value triathlon
experience in Hawke's Bay this year. Triathletes of any level can come and
be a part of the festival, it is not even necessary to race with a host of
other activities on offer.
Entry is available online at the above address or by requesting an entry
