Not so for Hamilton's Graham O'Grady. With no more than a night's sleep and close to 300 km's travel in between times O'Grady was on the start line at 8am Sunday for the first selection race. Only one thing was on his mind - make the selectors take note - meaning serious business. O'Grady in his first season of serious racing was out to catch selectors eyes and the best way to do that is be at the front. Sticking close to the leaders over the 1500 mtr swim O'Grady seized his chance early on in the non drafting cycle to move into the lead. After winning the 2000ETU Triathlon Cup Taupo's Bevan Docherty was not gonna be upstaged on his home turf and kept the young surprise package in his sights throughout. To the surprise of all spectators O'Grady was first back into T2 by just over a minute and maintained his lead for the first half of the run. Docherty showed superior running speed to move clear and claim the home town race. A real breakthrough event for O'Grady which leaves us wondering what if he had not raced the Pro Tour the night before. The women's race produced an equally unexpected result. Most attention was focused on Anna Tyler and the recently returned to competition Ady Ngawati. With a start to finish win it was another new talent who stole the show. Wellington's Scottish Import Catriona Morrison convicingly beat all women present and all but 12 of the men. Remember in early December Michael Jacques prediction that Morrison was a lady to watch. Well after Sunday's performance Catriona will certainly be the one to watch come Nationals on Feb 17th. With another month of serious training under her belt who knows what might happen. 1500mtr / 40km / 10km MENS RESULTS 1 Bevan Docherty Taupo 1:57:56 2 Graham O'Grady Hamilton 1:58:08 3 Brodie Madgwick Te Aroha 2:04:47 4 Steve Mellsop Wellington 2:05:33 5 Shingo Tani Japan 2:05:51 6 Scott Larsen Auckland 2:06:19 7 Carl Cairns Gisborne 2:07:09 8 Brent Jones Napier 2:07:40 9 Niels Madsen Wellington 2:08:15 10 Blair Cox New Plymouth 2:09:18 WOMENS RESULTS 1 Catriona Morrison Wellington 2:10:43 2 Anna Tyler Taupo 2:14:59 3 Ady Ngawati Whangarei 2:15:58 4 Samantha Warriner Whangarei 2:18:53 5 Marina Fowell Whakatane 2:22:32 6 Marie Higgison Mt 2:25:08 7 Cheuk Chi lau Gisborne 2:27:44 8 Nicola de lautour Auckland 2:28:38 9 Kara Northcott New Plymouth 2:29:19 10 Dot Larsen Hamilton 2:30:34 -------------------------------------------------------------------- NEED A COACH ? She was more than up to the task of coping with anything the weather and the opposition could throw at her. Adapting to the rough water swim conditions with ease, she went into the lead at the start of the bike leg and found that the strong winds hampered the opposition more than they did her and spent the rest of the race extending her gap over the rest of the field ever further ahead. Nathan Richmond had a much harder day getting his third win but despite "Anything that could have gone wrong, going wrong," was still able to come out on top. "Fortunately I was able to work around the problems and still win the race." added a somewhat relieved Richmond after the race. A strong gusting wind had whipped up the normally placid waters off Pine Harbour Marina into a very tough southerly chop. Richmond was one of several male athletes who initially swam off course only to realise their mistake and have to battle back to make the first turn buoy. Coping with problems as they occur during a race is a sign of a maturing athlete and Richmond was more than up to the task. As if his swim error wasn’t enough he temporarily lost a shoe in transition but along with Kieren Doe, was soon able to move to the front of the field and start controlling the race again. A swift second transition saw Richmond and Doe leading out at the start of the 5km run and from then on Richmond was able to pull away. for the win. Doe finished in second place, showing his best ever running form by pulling away from the more fancied Giannis Koutsgiannis. Finish of the day went to 15 year old Terenzo Bozzone who toughed it out with 38 year old Steve Farrell through out the final lap of the run for fourth spot, with the younger man just getting the edge, this time! Completing the podium finishes in the women’s races were Linley Smith and Tracey Fromow, both of whom did better than previously in the tough, testing conditions. Gurney plans on lining up for the Longest Day race on February 10, alongside race record-holder Keith Murray and three-time winner John Jacoby. But the man who pioneered the pod - a canopy around the front of the cycle to block the easterly head wind that buffets the Canterbury Plains - has another piece of gadgetry up his sleeve. "I've got a new bike, but it has to pass Juddy's scrutineering next weekend," Gurney said. His race entry was "conditional" on the bike passing muster. He was reluctant to divulge details about his mystery machine, and did not want it photographed "until maybe the day before the race". But Gurney said he "liked to innovate, which is what I enjoy about this sport". "I've done the race 15 years in a row and I always need a new angle to keep me passionate about the event. So this year I've decided to be a bit different with the bike and stretch the rules a little bit." Gurney is looking forward to the "race of champions". "It's going to be a very tough race this year, with Jacoby and Murray there. It's seven years since we three have raced head to head. "It's going to be a good race to watch the finish of. I think the lead will change around a wee bit, but it should be quite close." -------------------------------------------------------------------- TIMARU RESULTS Hong Kong triathlete Daniel Lee was the surprise package at the 14th annual Timaru Triathlon yesterday. Lee, in New Zealand for the racing season, was first out of the water from the swim and stayed near the front for the whole race. Conditions were cool and rainy to start with but it came out quite hot for the run Results Triathlon 1500 swim 40km bike 10km run Men Daniel Lee 1:57:08 Hong Kong Andrew Young 1:57:12 Christchurch Colin Clearwater 2:03:18 Oamaru Veteran men Tony Hood 2:08:04 Timaru Open women Catherine Wall 2:23:34 Timaru Veteran Women Nola Smitheram 2:37:04 Ashburton Multisport Triathlon 4km Kayak 40km cycle 10km run Gary Fahey 2.03.23 Timaru Oskar Stielau 2.03.24 Ashburton Graham Hunter 2:17:27 -------------------------------------------------------------------- A NOTE FROM CAM www.cameronbrown.co.nz and you will find what I'm up to where I am, sponsors, photo's, results etc. Also on www.xtri.com you will find a interview with me. As a safety consideration the organisers offered a duathlon option for competitors who didn’t feel confident enough to cope with the conditions they faced. However most of the field were more than happy to battle through the water, in this the third race of the six race RoadHouse Triathlon series. Held in conjunction with Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro Tour the RoadHouse Triathlon series continues to attract participants of all ages and abilities to both race it out for age group placings or just enjoy the challenge of taking part in one of New Zealand’s friendliest triathlons. The inclusion of the ‘Try a Tri’ category has been a welcome addition to the series with the numbers up with every event. Unfortunately (and for the first time in the fifteen event history of the RoadHouse Triathlon Series) the conditions and safety considerations caused the organisers to cancel the swim in the ‘Try a Tri’ event holding the event as a duathlon option. One family making an afternoon of it were the Emmitt’s. Whilst Kengo finished second in his age category in the ‘Try a Tri’, in the Sprint Event Miki finished third in the 30-39 women’s category in 1:11:40 and Nigel finished in 1:13:38 in the 30-39 men’s division, which I guess means he has to do the washing up this week! The next event is at Mission Bay on Sunday 4th Feb with a choice of three distances, Try a Tri, Sprint and Olympic.
