Always a strong crowd from Christchurch and Dunedin, as well as Ashburton

Southern Traverse organisers delay event by two weeks
16 JANUARY 2001
By KEVIN TUTTY Christchurch Press
The date for the Southern Traverse multisport race this year is likely to be
delayed two weeks to try and minimise the impact of the Eco-Challenge event.
Traverse director Pascalle Lorre said yesterday that the dates are likely to
be put back to the end of November.
The Eco-Challenge will start on October 21 and finish on November 2.
The Traverse was to start on November 11, but is now likely to start about
November 23.
The American-based Eco race, being sponsored by Industry New Zealand and
Tourism New Zealand, had been placed two weeks before the New
Zealand-organised Traverse, to the annoyance of Lorre and her fellow
director, Geoff Hunt, and many New Zealand multisport athletes.
The Traverse organisers say staging the Eco race two weeks before their race
will detract from their ability to attract top competitors.
"We are investigating putting the race back two weeks. The main reason is to
allow the media to cover our race. If the events are close together we are
unlikely to get media coverage, which will mean it will be difficult for
competitors to get sponsors if they do not get media coverage.
Lorre said putting the Traverse at a later date would not help entries. "It
will still not give competitors in the Eco race enough time to recover and
enter the Traverse."

MERIDIAN ENERGY WILD CHALLENGE The background of the day's event...
The Wairaurahiri River [which drains Lake Hauroko, the deepest lake in NZ]
was full and exciting, Keith Alderson of CHCH who was in team No.68 had the
fastest time off the river in 1:51:05.
The fastest individual off the river was Andy Macbeth of CHCH with 1:51:51.
Competitor No: 10 Wayne Stachurski of Leeston had an encounter with a large
object when a pressure wave pushed him into an eddy - damage to his kayak,
finished the river section in 2:44:04 but this was due to extra weight of
on-board water!!!! But won the spot prize of a mountain bike! He was
stoked! He really would have made a much faster time.
The best run time for the 30km course was 3:33:56 by Andy Macbeth.
The weather was great for the competitors, warm with light showers to keep
them fresh. The run did have a bit of mud, but the tide was very full and
against the slower competitors near the end of the run section. The cycle
section has a tricky bit or two, but everyone came through without a crash.
Derek Turnbull, Invercargill, [aged 74years] who is listed as the "oldest,
fastest man in the World" to the athletic fraternity entered in the Port
Craig Canter and had a great time. Did not have any mishaps with his bike
this year. Has previously experienced both chain and peddle mal-functions.
The prizegiving function went well, the crayfish & piklets well received.
Naming Right Sponsor told the audience "we'll be back next year, see you all
there".
