THE FULL MOUNTY
www.xtri.com has posted a very insightful look at the Port of Tauranga Half
Ironman. And why shouldn't it be insightful after all the guru of
www.xtri.com Rob Docherty was out competing on the course slogging it out
amongst the age groupers.
The "Full Mounty" report concludes with the following
"Could this be the year for New Zealand's two best Ironman athletes to bask
in the glory of winning their home country race? It has only happened once,
in 1994, when Erin Baker and Karyn's husband, Scott Ballance, were
victorious. 2001 seems to offer the best chance since then of another Kiwi
double."
I'm sure as heck gonna be in Taupo on MArch 3rd to see if Xtri's prediction
comes true. Hope you can be there too.

distances of 500m or 1000m swim and a 3km beach run. A good chance to catch

rivalries will be resumed. Race start 6:30pm, registration 5:30 - 6:15.
Results from Race 5 are now available on the club website

KEITH MURRAY TO CONTEST COAST TO COAST
THE PRESS 13 JANUARY 2001
By TONY SMITH
Coast-to-Coast guru Robin Judkins' dream of staging a "race of champions" is
a step closer to reality after race record-holder Keith Murray confirmed he
will compete for the first time in seven years.
Murray, now 39, last raced the Speight's Coast-to-Coast in 1994, when he
smashed the race record in a searingly fast time of 10 hr 34min 17sec.
Six-time Coast-to-Coast champion Steve Gurney's name was missing from the
provisional list of competitors issued on Friday.Gurney still has time to
confirm he will be back to defend his title.
Murray said the offer of a $10,000 winners' purse and the chance to pit his
skills again against other elite competitors had helped lure him back.
"And it seems like it's going to be very competitive this year. There's
going to be a lot of up-and-coming talent and some previous winners may be
going to compete.
The elite athletes also have an additional incentive. The first male athlete
to break the 10hr 45min barrier, or the first woman to go under 12hr 15min
over the 238km course, will win a $70,000 Subaru Outback car.
Murray won the 1992 and 1993 two-day Coast-to-Coast titles, and followed up
with his win in the Longest Day in 1994.
He has also won prestigious international adventure races, including the Eco
Challenge.
Keith Murray may have confirmed his entry, but his wife, Andrea Murray, will
not be back to chase the women's title she won in 1997 in a record 12hr 9min
26sec.
The women's field is headed by defending champion Jill Westenra, of
Wellington, a former New Zealand duathlon, triathlon, and mountain running
champion.
Judkins said 850 competitors had already entered this year's race, including
almost 60 from overseas.

Top multisport duo show their mettle
The Marlborough Express 12 JANUARY 2001
Marlborough multisport athletes Andrea Koorey and Mark Bryant showed their
preparations for February's Coast to Coast race are going well with wins in
the second race of the Top of the South triathlon/multisport series at Lake
Rotoiti on Sunday January 7th.
In the multisports event Koorey again showed the benefit of her training
regime. She was able to win by three minutes over the next woman and her
time would have placed within the top 10 men. Veteran Mark Bryant came
fourth overall and notched an easy win over the rest of the vet men's field.
Bryant's form could see him feature prominently in the vet section of the
Coast to Coast.
In the triathlon Marlborough's Marty Birch cleared out from the field to win
by more than 14 minutes from Nelson's Chris Nicholson. The younger Kendricks
completed the successful day for the family with Kew taking out the under-18
girls class and younger brother Michael grabbing the honours in the under-16
boys and placing third overall.
