Cumming ready to defend triathlon title
By NATHAN BURDON of The Southland Times
Defending champion Sid Cumming will again be the man to beat at Saturday's
Southland triathlon championships at Awarua Bay.
Racing starts at 5pm because of tides in the bay and includes a 1500m swim,
40km bike and 10km run.
The out-and-back course design for the Invercargill Licensing
Trust-sponsored event will mean spectators will get plenty of opportunities
to watch the contestants.
Cumming said he had been training well and was feeling confident going into
the race. "But anything can happen. You can have a puncture and that's it."
Cumming has won the event five times, including twice in the past two years.
Sharon Johns will also return to defend her women's title.
Southland Triathlon Academy members will compete in a shortened version of
the championships.

ITU DUATHLON CONGRESS
Information from www.duathlon.com
In conjunction with the 2001 Duathlon Long Course World Championships at
Powerman Holland in September, the first ever ITU Duathlon Conference will
take place. The conference is scheduled for September 8 in the Dutch town of
Venray.
Every National Federation is encouraged to send representatives to this
important and historic event. Among the topics covered will be policy and
strategic planning for duathlon.
The idea for the Conference is just one of the positive ideas originating
from the newly rejuvenated and active ITU Duathlon Committee. In November
the first ever Duathlon Athletes Council met in South Africa, and among the
members were representatives from around the world, including World
Champions Benny Vansteelant and Edwige Pitel.
Other Conference topics include:
1. Strategic planning for Duathlon
2. Rules and regulations
