BONUS TIME FOR TRIATHLON WINNERS
from Ian Hepenstall
Tauranga, Dec 28 - Buoyed on by a handy bonus, Auckland’s Cameron Brown and
Wellington’s Megan Hall dominated the Surfbreaker triathlon at Mount
Maunganui today.
Brown and Hall won the popular annual Air Pacific-sponsored triathlon, and
each claimed the $500 bonus for finishing inside the record times for the
750m swim, 16km cycle and 5km run.
Brown eased to the front during the bike with Gisborne-based international
triathlete Stephen Sheldrake and had too many legs to easily beat the
52-minute bonus barrier, clocking 49.06.
Hall spread-eagled the field from the start, opening a one minute advantage
out of the water and going on to win in 56.55, more than a minute inside the
bonus mark.
The win and the bonus were handy for Brown, but more importantly he received
a green light that his progress in on track as he chases a record fourth win
in the Port of Tauranga half Ironman next Saturday.
``It’s my first race in more than three months so you are always a bit on
edge to find your where you are at,’’ Brown said.
``I’ve just come off a very big week so I am pleased with how I feel and how
I am progressing.’’
The national Ironman champion is setting himself not only for the half
Ironman crown but his main early season goal is Ironman New Zealand in Taupo
on March 3. He has finished runner-up in the last two Ironman events in
Taupo.
Brown won by a minute from Sheldrake with the 15-year-old Aucklander Terenzo
Bozzone continuing to impress, finishing a further minute back in third
ahead of fellow Auckland juniors Ben Pulham and Scott Larsen.
Hall, the former national triathlon champion, is considering a move up to
the half Ironman distance to complete an impressive hat-trick of wins at
Mount Maunganui this summer.
The Wellington athlete followed her Tinman victory with an emphatic effort
despite a break from training over the past week.
``My husband and I have just returned from our honeymoon in Hawaii. It was a
year late but worth the wait,’’ Hall said.
``I felt it a bit out there today but happy to win. I will really think
about racing the half Ironman now.
``I’ve never raced one and really unsure how I will go or if it is the best
thing with the national selection race and national championships coming up.’’
The 26-year-old cleared out from the start, clear by a minute out of the
water, extending it to 1min 40sec from 16-year-old Gisborne athlete Michelle
Hyland and Te Puke veteran Cindy Taylor off the bike. She eventually eased
home under the bonus barrier and 2min 20secs ahead of Hyland with another
teenager Julia Scopes (Auckland) out-kicking Taylor on the soft sand for
third.
The rising tide of talented teenagers again impressed with four teens in the
top 10 men and five in the top 10 women.
There were a number of notable competitors including Olympic cyclist Brendon
Cameron, former half Ironman champion Dave Bradding, and Discovery Southern
Traverse organiser Geoff Hunt.

ON TRACK TO GET UN SHAPE
NZ Herald article 13.12.2000 written by Martin Johnston
Christine Baber is one of 60 children selected for special training and
dietary advice. The Herald will be following her progress. Christine Baber
wants to look like the other kids, and says she is sick of the unkind
taunts thrown at her by some children.
The 11-year-old pupil of Randwick Park School in South Auckland says that
she gets called "fatso and fatty, but I just ignore them - and I call them
names back, too." She is so keen to lose weight that she has plucked up
courage to enter the Weet-Bix Kiwi Kids Tryathlon in Auckland next March.
She is among 60 children aged 8 to 14 picked for special training and
dietary advice in a pilot programme started by food company Sanitarium and
supported by the Hillary Commission.
The 60, who are all entered in one of the seven tryathlons being held around
the country in February and March, were selected because they were not
active enough or ate poorly.
The aim of the programme is to highlight the link between healthy eating,
physical activity and good health.
Researchers have found that 20 children a day fracture their forearms or
wrists, and believe the rising rate of obesity may be a cause. Obesity is
also linked to diabetes and heart disease.
Christine's mother, Jocelyn Baber, said that her daughter took some
exercise - but not enough - and ate healthy food.
Christine said her favourite meal was KFC. Mrs Baber said she worried about
Christine's weight because of the effect it might have on her future health.
Christine and the three other children from her school picked for the
programme will be trained by former youth world triathlon champion Nathan
Richmond.
The four were a little worried when he told them yesterday that they would
have to run 1.5km, but were reassured when he explained it was just up to
a nearby corner and back.
And, though they would have to eat healthy foods like rice, vegetables,
fruit and yoghurt, they could reward themselves with a weekly chocolate bar
or another treat - if they stuck to the training.

KICK YA WAY HOME
Kickbike New Zealand which is a new kind of scooter, one that was developed
in Finland originally as a cross training tool for kicksledding, but is now
also widely used as a cross truing tool for athletes, particularly
triathletes and cyclists in Europe and the States-mainly because of low
impact, low injury style which is beneficial for those with lower back or
knee injuries.
Trans Atlantic rower Rob Hamill recently Kick biked his way around Taupo on
one. Rob will be part of a 2 person team kickbiking in next year's Coast to
Coast.

"Wild Places NZ Challenge" - length of NZ Race
Despite Southern Traverse and Eco Challenge both looking possibilities for
late 2001, the Wild Places NZ Challenge is still planned to start in
mid-November next year and run it for 28+2 days.
Entry forms first week in February 2001
Entries - first in, first served. 30 places reserved out of 200 for
internationals which will be released on 1 May 2001.
A $500 deposit with your entry and time payment through till 31st of May
will allow you to sneak the milk money so your partner/toyboy/mistress is
still not aware that you have entered.
On the entry, you will need to complete your previous experience and
effectively convince us that you can complete it. I have no problems if you
are a bloody bruised and battered mess but as they say, tire kickers will do
nothing for themselves or the event by entering. I will call every entrant
prior to using your deposit as a payment on my Ferrari to ensure that you
are committed and up to it. I am staggered at the number of people looking
to undertake this event as a challenge from all walks of life. It is not an
event solely for elites while it must be self-evident that you'll need to be
superhuman to finish it.
Prizes - $130,000 as before across the field. This event is not the Eco
Challenge. There is no US$38 Mill budget. However, you won't notice the
difference.
This race is run by kiwis for other kiwis and just a few internationals.
When I say it's run by kiwis, you will get to know that there is a little
bit of German efficiency within the team. Keep training, keep planning - we
are.
