Olympians battle out triathlon in spint finish
from Ian Hepenstal
The dream teams containing Olympians Craig Watson and Ben Bright took line
honours at the season opening triathlon in Christchurch but it was
Marlborough’s Jonathon Collet who took the individual title.
Held off Scarborough beach in Sumner the first leg, a 500m swim was set in
fresh calm conditions. Leading the way was Bright but hot on his heels was
fellow New Zealand team member Kris Gemmel and Collet, the leading
individual. In the change over Bright tagged his cyclist Bevan Docherty (the
current European Cup Champion) for the 20km out and back flat cycle stage,
Gemmel and Collet were hard on the chase and leading the rest of the field
was Chris McAteer. Docherty, who recently moved to Christchurch from Tuapo,
held onto the lead until the penultimate kilometer when he was finally
joined by Gemmel while Collet had effectively destroyed the rest of the
field only a further 15 seconds back.
Onto the 5km final run leg and it was a battle between Olympians Watson and
Bright to take overall line honours and only a major debacle was going to
stop Collet winning the individual race. The Olympic pair traded strides for
the full 5km and in the end it came down to a sprint finish with Bright
edging out Watson by the narrowest of margins. Meanwhile just over a minute
behind Collet recorded a comfortable victory in his first year in the senior
ranks in a time of 51:52. Taking out the minor placings were Chris McAteer
in 53:18 and Joel Brittenden 57:05
For Collett who only moved to Christchurch one week ago to train under the
trusty eye of triathlon guru John Hellemans it was a dream start to the
domestic season for one of the rising talents in the sport. As for the
quintet of Bright, Watson, Docherty, and Gemmel this team relay race marked
the official start to the domestic season. Watson and Gemmel will be
competing on the prestigious Formula One tour in Australia, Bright will be
focusing on the New Zealand Long Distance Champs as well as several key
races in Australia and Docherty will take part in several International
races over the summer.
In the womans race juniors Ainslie Savage and Katherine Wall illustrated the
awesome potential by upstaging the entire senior womans field taking the
first and second placings respectively. First senior woman and third over
the line was Joanne Ryder in a time of 1:00:29. With the success of the
current womans only triathlon series running in Christchurch female race
numbers continue to rise.
Run in conjunction with the triathlon was a Duathlon event that was
dominated by Murry Wilkinson winning in a time of 53:10 and taking the
womans race was Ivonne McDonnell in 1:03:02.
The next event for the Canterbury Triathlon Club will be the Summer Mini
triathlon on January 14th, this will be followed by the New Zealand team
selection race on March 11th

NORTHERN TRVERSE
from Peter Ellis
The northern traverse multi sport event from lake ferry in the wairarapa to
waikanae on the kapiti coast was blessed with ideal conditions on sunday
December 10th with little to no wind but temperatures rising to the mid 20's
by the time many finished.
At the end of the 15km kayak up the Ruamahunga river the speed demons team
of Hayley shearer and Daniel Busch were leading the field after Daniel
completed the kayak in 1 hr 5min 24sec.. just on 2 minutes behind was mens
favourite Richard Ussher while fellow individual men Rick Dennis Martin and
Craig Stevens were a further minute back along with the two person team of
Mike Read and jeremy Boyd. the leading women Jill Westenra was more than 10
minutes off the pace.
The position changed on the first 25km cycle with Jeremy Boyd taking his team to
a 2 minutes lead over Richard Ussher who by now had his eyes set on a sub 4
hr 30 time for the race. Hayley Shearer kept her team in contention
finishing third while Jill Westenra was out on her own as the first
individual women.
The gruelling run through the Rimutaka incline saw Jeremy Boyd continue to
open the gap on Ussher with top runner Duncan Ross bringing his team right
into contention with running 1hr 22 min to equal boyds run and take 2
minutes out of Richard Ussher.
On the final 45 km cycle leg over the Akatarawa road places remain almost
the same with Boyd's team finally completing the course in 4 hr 32 minutes
35 seconds... Richard Ussher as expected was the first solo competitor to
finish just 6 minutes back in 4.38.47 to break the previous race record by
some 12 minutes. Jill Westenra continued her dominace of the womens race
winning by over 25 minutes.

Reesby & Company Stroke & Stride Series
Race #3 7 December 2000 St Heliers Bay
With a 1000 metre swim and 3 kilometre run on the menu this race provided an
ideal opportunity for the recognized swimmers in the field to shine.
By swim’s end it was Caroline Collard who had made a break on the rest of
the field and ran up the beach in 11min 35sec, Bec Linton was 17 seconds
back then another 40 seconds to the chasing bunch including Anna Cleaver,
Debbie Tanner, Hayley Swaving, Evelyn Williamson and Jillian Wood.
The 3 kilometre run was fast and furious but enough to shuffle the top
place getters. Evelyn Williamson clocked an impressive run for victory on
the night. Equally impressive just one second behind was Bec Linton who had
overtaken Caroline Collard during the run. Vanessa Palmer grabbed fourth
spot seconds ahead of Debbie Tanner.
With all the turmoil in the women’s field it was up to the men to return
some stability to the Series. Olympian Steven Ferguson stretched out the men’s
field. He led from the water in 10min 31 sec.
Brent Foster just a couple of seconds back. These two had a small break on
Kieran Doe, who was just ahead of Haydn Woolley. About ten minutes and 3 k's
later, Brent Foster crossed the line in first place.
This was the Fozzie’s 35th victory in S & S. since 1992.
Kieran Doe took second place ahead Haydn Woolley. Liam Scopes snares fourth
by clocking the days fastest run split and squeezing Malcolm McGregor back
into fifth place.
Next race is Tuesday, January 9, 2001.
