Richmond and Williamson make it two in a row....
by Ken Maclaren
Series leaders Auckland's Nathan Richmond and Wellington's Evelyn Williamson
made it two out of two as they stamped their authority on the series and
race two of the six race Air New Zealand Tri Pro Tour.
Richmond had surf champion Brent Foster and Kieren Doe for company out of the
water but a faster transition saw him make a solo bid soon after the start
of the bike leg.
One minute up after the first of two laps he held the gap at fifty seconds
despite the efforts of an ever growing chase group. Paul Leitch made a late
break jumping away from the bunch with Giannis Koutsogiannis for company
heading into transition two.
Richmond was up and away and despite having ridden alone for the full 20km was
able to extend his lead on the run. Kieren Doe ran barefoot and immediately
gained himself several seconds. As they came around with two of the run laps
to go though it was Brent Foster who was the best of the rest putting the
hammer down he moved clear into second. Experience had the edge over youth for
the final podium spot as 38 year old Steve Farrell just held off 19 year old
Kieren Doe in a tough sprint for the line.
"I'm rapped," said Richmond after his win, "It's great to go into the rest
of the series with two wins under my belt. Obviously anything can happen over
the next four races but my initial aim was to make it two out of two."
Evelyn Williamson joined Richmond as a double winner. She soon chased down
swim leader Debbie Tanner once they were on dry land and despite a six
strong group working well together behind her she started the run with a
ninety second lead. It was the national duathlon champion Nicole Cope who once
again ran herself out of the chase bunch and into second place. Despite gaining
back forty five of those seconds the 5km was just too short for her to make
enough headway. It was a repeat performance for Linley Smith in third.
"It's great to be racing and winning in Auckland again," said Williamson.
"Like Nathan I'm delighted to make it two out of two. 2000 has been a hard year.
I'm going to enjoy my Christmas, but I'm looking forward to getting back at
the end of January for the next round."
