RADIO SPORT MULTISPORT SHOW Radio Sport has agreed to run a 30 minute weekly show on multisport. This has developed through the prompting of Andrew Dewhurst, who will front the show. It is every Tuesday from today from 2.30pm to 3pm as a rule. Ian Hepenstall will be on each week with Andrew rounding up all things triathlon, duathlon, multisport, adventure etc and we will also include 2-3 interviews. Tri Updates own Gary Boyd will be todays guest on the Radio Sport's multisport show talking about the duathlon in the NZ College Games. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OLYMPIAN TRIATHLETE GUEST AT COLLEGE GAMES from Kara Wright, Media Manager, New Zealand College Games Olympic and Paraylmpic Athletes will be bracing themselves for an afternoon of action, when they join thousands of New Zealand’s youth, in a celebration of sport and entertainment. Olympians joining athletes and supporters at the New Zealand College Games Opening Ceremony on Friday at Porritt Stadium include Triathlete, Evelyn Williamson and Wrestler Jotham Pellew. Paralympian's to attend the opening ceremony are Power lifter Tracey Wright, High Jumper Tania Bradley, and Javelin Thrower John Dowell. “This is a great opportunity for New Zealand youth to experience an Olympic like event. It looks like it has the potential to reach an Olympic stage. I can’t wait for the buzz to kick in and secondary school athletes to realize what a fantastic event this is going to be,” said Paralympian, track and field athlete, Tania Bradley. “This type of competition really gives secondary school students a chance to get together and push sports. New Zealand really needs to get competitive against the rest of the world and this is an opportunity to encourage hearing our National Anthem in the future,” said Olympic Wrestler Jotham Pellew. As well as the five Olympians attending the opening ceremony Clay Target Shooter, Victor Shaw and Paralympian Swimmer Sean Tretheway will join in supporting athletes in various ways including presenting medals and holding seminars. The New Zealand College Games held in association with Hamilton City Council kicks off on Friday 4 to 6pm with the free opening ceremony at Porritt Stadium featuring New Zealand number one artists Deep Obsession and Xtreme Air BMX stunt riders. Fantastic sporting competition and entertainment is planned throughout the games December 8th to 12th. The 21-year-old Nathan Richmond held off the challenge from fellow Aucklander Will Smith (22), Blenheim’s Jonathan Collett (18) and Auckland’s Terenzo Bozzone (15) in today’s Olympic distance ASB sponsored event. Richmond, the former world youth champion, has returned from a year out of the sport to recapture some sparkling form, leading from gun to tape, following on from his win in the first round of the Air NZ Pro Tour last weekend. He led Taupo Ironman Bryan Rhodes and Smith out of the water in idyllic conditions, and extended his advantage to two minutes over Smith and Collett in a powerful performance of the three-lap 40km cycle. Smith took some time out of Richmond on the 10km run but the young Aucklander held on to win in an impressive 1:50.24. Smith finished 1min 19sec behind with Collett 2min 27sec down in third and Bozzone a further two minutes behind. The group of 30-something endurance athletes followed including Stephen Farrell (Auckland), Tauranga half Ironman record holder Walter Thorburn (Papamoa), Rhodes and former two-time world duathlon champion Matt Brick (Tauranga). The women’s race proved a successful comeback for Wellington’s Megan Hall (formerly Evans) who held on to a to a handy lead in the face of Auckland flyers Nicole Cope and Fiona Docherty. Hall, who led out of the water, took a three minute buffer off the bike from Cope and five minutes on Docherty. Cope produced an impressive 37.03 split for the 10km, making a desperate push to close the gap over the final kilometer, with Hall 25 metres ahead when she ran out of tarmac. Doherty, one of the world’s top 10 duathletes, was even more impressive with a 35:48 run to finish a further 30 seconds behind. Hall won in 2:06.16 with Cope 2:06.20 and Docherty 2:06.53. The race also doubled as an official trial for the New Zealand team for the youth Olympics in Sydney next month. Following the race youth commissioner Barry Larsen named the following team for Sydney: Male: Keiran Doe (Auckland), James Elvery (Auckland), Jonathan Collett (Blenheim), Greg Weatherall (Auckland), Ben Pulham (Auckland). Female: Michelle Hyland (Gisborne), Debbie Tanner (Auckland), Brooke Pattle (Auckland), Kirsty Whiting (Auckland). The Awards Function will revert to the evening time slot of the past. It will be held at 6pm on Sunday 4 March at the Big Marquee. This has been brought about with the new Kona qualification procedure that Ironman New Zealand has adopted in line with other ironman races, requiring a roll-down meeting on Sunday afternoon. Cycle Course Change The bike to run transition will now be at Northcroft Reserve, which is located on the lakefront in front of the Suncourt Motor Lodge (beside the Mini Golf), approximately 800m from the Ironman headquarters This means cyclists will ride through the main street of Taupo on both laps which will be great for spectators. Run Course Change There is an alteration to the run course also. Runners heading back to town on the first lap will complete a loop around the Ironman Village, along Redoubt St and come out of Storey Place by the traffic lights, which is the same exit used for the start of the bike leg. Runners will complete only one loop on the run leg. This will be at Rainbow Point where triathletes will complete the loop on both the way out and on the return. This will avoid the busy intersection at Wharewaka Point (which was the second loop this year) and was also unlit at night. Ironman New Zealand is a TriNZ Sanctioned event ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The King of Commentators The voice of Ironman Canada, Steve King will again be the special guest commentator at Ironman New Zealand. King is regarded as the doyen of triathlon commentators, having commentated on a number of world championships. He will join the Ironman New Zealand commentary team headed by Alan Reeves. Reeves and King first met when Alan Reeves joined one of River Promotions iroNtourZ to Ironman Canada in 1998. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tri Updates are bought to you in association with : * Leppin Sport - http://www.leppinsport.com assisting sports people in being the best they possibly can be ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEPPIN TAUPO HALF IRONMAN Entries by area are as follows Auckland 135 Taupo 32 Wellington 19 Tauranga 15 Hamilton 14 Rotorua 7 Napier 4 Katikati 4 New Plymouth 3 Taumaranui 3 Palmerston North 2 Whangarei 2 Masterton 2 Levin 2 Bulls 2 Australia 2 Pukekohe 1 Te Awanga 1 Te Puke 1 Inglewood 1 Huntly 1 Thames 1 Christchurch 1 Paeroa 1 This is a TriNZ Approved event ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DUNEDIN EVENTS Could you please post the following events on Tri update on behalf of the Dunedin Tri club.
