OLYMPIAN WINS FIRST PRO TRIATHLON TOUR EVENT
from Ian Hepenstal
Sydney Olympian Evelyn Williamson held on to win the opening round of the
first professional triathlon tour event in Auckland today.
Williamson withstood a late challenge from national duathlon champion Nicole
Cope to win round one of the six-race Air New Zealand Pro Tour at Mission
Bay, Auckland.
The Waikanae-based Williamson led from Auckland’s Vanessa Palmer out of the
water in the Olympic-distance race, and extended her advantage to a minute
after a solo effort over the four-lap 40km cycle.
Cope (Hamilton), former Ironman New Zealand champion Sue Clark (Auckland),
Tracey Frommo (Auckland) and South African Linley Smith worked well together
to keep the margin to Williamson at a manageable distance.
Cope worked her way clear of the chase bunch and bit into Williamson’s
advantage over the 10km run. Williamson responded to the challenge over the
final sprint to hold off the fast-finishing Cope by 30 metres, clocking
2:05.20. Smith finished third ahead of Palmer.
Former world surf champion Brent Foster (Auckland) grabbed the advantage out
of the water in the men’s race, forcing his way to a one minute advantage
over the chasing Auckland trio of Nathan Richmond, Kieran Doe and Graham O’
Grady.
Richmond, the former world youth champion, and Doe, a New Zealand junior
representative, showed their strength on the bike to quickly reel in Foster.
They worked effectively in the draft-legal format to open a 1min 30sec gap
at the end of the 40km cycle, with Richmond powering clear over the run to
win impressively in 1:48.13, more than two minutes clear of Doe.
The outstanding 15-year-old Terenzo Bozzone (Auckland) showed some of his
undoubted promise to run up into the third place.
The series, devised by former Canadian professional Frank Clarke, offers the
first professional draft-legal series in New Zealand as a stepping-stone for
young triathletes hoping to break on to the world circuit.
The second round of the Air New Zealand Pro Tour will be a sprint distance
event at Okahu Bay, Auckland in two weeks.

NORTH HARBOUR TRI CLUB AQUATHON NEWS
From Henry Barfoot
The last Aquathon had 130 starters. We want to build on this so we've
dreamed up a special promotion for next time...
BRING YOUR FRIENDS - RACE FREE
If you bring along two friends to the aquathon on Thursday 30 November you
can race for free!
There's only one condition - your friends must not have raced a North
Harbour aquathon before.
It doesn't matter if they've raced other events, they only have to be new to
our race.
The NHTC Aquathon series is designed with first-timers in mind - most people
who've ever done a bit of pool swimming can manage 500m, and a 3km beach run
should be a breeze. Don't forget there are lifeguards in attendance and the
swimmers are never more than 200m from shore.
And now the aquathon race report...remember full results and series
standings are available at http://northharbourtri.tripod.com
CONSISTENCY PAYING OFF IN AQUATHON SERIES
The third race of the North Harbour Triathlon Club Aquathon seasonsaw
Birkenhead's Vanessa Palmer run away to another comfortable win. In a
series so far dominated by juniors it was refreshing to see two more
experienced competitors coming through. South African representative Lynley
Smith finished second ahead of Sue Clark.
Fresh from a second in the Queens Head Tavern Icebreaker Triathlon William
Smith was never challenged over the 1000m swim and 3km run event, showing
the fitness developed from racing in the United States over the winter.
In the junior category the absence of top swimmer Sam Gunther allowed others
a chance to shine, with NHTC members Jade Gilbertson and Lisa Young
finishing first and second respectively.

Reesby & Company Stroke & Stride Series
Race #2 22 November 2000 St Heliers Bay
The second saw the pro field racing without wetsuits for the first time.
Auckland City laid on a beautiful afternoon with the field basking in warm.
The pro men and women’s fields started at the same time. Action was fast
and furious around the 750 metre triangular swim course. As they exited the
water Olympic swimmer, Steven Ferguson was leading in a shade under 9
minutes closely pursued by Brent Foster, with a small break to a chasing
pack which included Paul Amey and Kieran Doe.
Some of the women’s stayed with this group. Rebecca Nesbit exiting the
water in 9min 16sec accompanied by Caroline Collard and Bec Linton.
The 4 kilometre run to Mission Bay and return was flat and fast without any
wind. Paul Amey was the fleetest of foot and ran his way to his second
straight S'n'S victory. Defending Series Champion Brent Foster stayed
close and finished just 9 seconds behind. Kieran Doe backed up his
outstanding swim with an impressive run to finish third, his best ever
result in a S'n'S.
A great swim had Evelyn Williamson handily placed heading onto the run. She
soon moved to the front of the women’s field. Some very quick runners were
coming from behind but Williamson didn’t give them a chance as she recorded
one of the fastest run splits and her first S'n'S win.
Fiona Docherty claimed fastest run coming through for second, just ahead of
Race #1,winner Nicole Cope.
The next race is Thursday, December 7, 2000.

LAKE TO PORT REPORT
The 1998 winners Fitco Finatics held off a strong challenge to win the 2000
United Networks Lake to Port challenge.
The Fitco Finatics predictably scored their second overall victory in three
years although the stern test they received from the two-person of
Auckland's Shane Fookes and David Barnaby was not so expected.
It was not resolved until the penultimate leg when team sponsor Mark
Crowther produced a commanding ride from the top of Pyes Pa to Omanu that
led to a four-minute winning margin.
On a cool and blustery day, there was much to admire in the efforts on the
individuals and two-person teams.
Wellington computer ace Austin Parker overcame a virus through his system to
repeat his 1999 individual men's honours, but limped home with a with a leg
injury and required a saline drip to aid recovery.
``I suffered the leg problem last week but didn't feel it until the first
hill run and I couldn't run downhill. I just hobbled after that,'' Parker
said.
``I never considered pulling out but that was just so hard.''
Parker had been responsible for the increase in individual numbers,
attracted a group of six training partners from the capital to take part.
``I told them to come up because this was a fun event. It doesn't feel much
fun at the moment.''
Parker finished in 8hr 10min 38sec, nearly 20 minutes slower than his
winning time last year but enough to be 23rd overall.
It was also a repeat for former Tauranga competitor Linda Van Uden, who was
the leading individual woman in 9hr 16min 43sec, also well outside last
year's time.
``That wind made it so tough out there. If it was a head wind it would have
been impossible. Thank god it's over,'' Van Uden said.
So why did she endure nine hours and 200km of running and biking?
"It's a great challenge. I've done three ironman races and this is probably
tougher.'' she replied
Van Uden will now plot to defend her age-group title won at Ironman New
Zealand in Taupo, and on to her first crack at the world ironman
championship at Kona, Hawaii.
The battle for team honours settled on four combinations that broke clear
on the second leg, a 60km cycle from Taupo via Whakamaru dam. Tauranga
four-man teams Fitco Finatics and Mclarens Loss Adjusters were joined by the
two-man teams of Fookes-Barnaby and Canterbury of Tauranga (Damien Max-Scott
George) nearly four minutes clear of the chase bunch.
New Zealand veteran crosscountry champion Paul Herlihy gave Fitco a 3min
30sec lead after the 11-km run to Upper Atimuri but all four teams were
within a minute following the 44km cycle through Rotorua to Paradise Valley.
Paul De Rijk opened the three minute buffer for Fitco in the 13-km dig
through Ngongotaha and up the Tauranga Direct Rd ahead of a strong effort
from Barnaby with McLarens Loss Adjusters slipping back and George forced
out with a leg injury.
Herlihy felt a recurrence of a calf injury warming up for his second run
forcing national age-group triathlete Brian Foster to a speedy change after
already completing a run and bike.
Fookes bit into the lead in the 14km run through the gorge and slipped in
front at the change near Taumata Rd in Pyes Pa. However Crowther pushed
clear up the climb to Pyes Pa school and pushed more than two minutes ahead
and De Rijk extended the buffer in the run to Mount Maunganui.
Fookes-Barnaby held on for second and top two-strong team ahead orf Mclarens
Loss Adjusters and Hamilton's Cutters Cover, the top three-person team.
