SOUTH ISLAND SELECTION RACE
The Canterbury Tri champs (Olympic distance) are also a NZ selection race.
Date is 11 march 2001 I will send more details soon.
It is a multi lap format based at Corsair bay over a scenic course which is
deceptively tough with a run course that will sort the men from the boys.

Reesby & Co Stroke and Stride
Race #1 8 November 2000 St Heliers Bay, Auckland
The first race in the season’s Stroke & Stride Series supposedly signifies
the start of summer but over the past couple of seasons the first race has
more closely resembled the final day of winter. The forecast for this
season’s Reesby & Company Stroke & Stride opener was for gale force winds
but fortunately these were not apparent in the sheltered bay of St Heliers
however it was cold and for the few that braved the swim without wearing a
wetsuit it was a chilly start to the season. While the temperatures may
have been on the cool side, one thing that was hot was the caliber of the
field lined up to start as they chased the $20,000 in Prize Money on offer.
The women’s field were started first and although the swim is only 500
metres for this race, Caroline Collard wasn’t waiting around for company and
by the half way point had opened up a 10 second lead over the chasing pack.
The cold water didn’t slow down the times and Caroline recorded a sizzling
5min 59sec running back up the beach followed by Rebecca Nesbit and Anna
Cleaver now more than 20 seconds behind. Out onto the run and it was Evelyn
Williamson who moved to the front of the field closely followed by Jo Lawn
and with Nicole Cope also gaining ground with every step. It was Nicole
Cope who won the opening race last season and she repeated the victory this
year, over coming her 7min 45sec swim to just head off Evelyn Williamson who
in turn only just kept her nose in front of Jo Lawn at the line.
Defending Series Champion, Brent Foster would have preferred the swim to be
longer and the conditions to be rougher to give him more of a chance to put
some distance on his rivals in the men’s field. The 500 metres proved
enough for him to lead the classy field by swims end but the lead was only a
matter of seconds and with a slow transition thrown in, Brent really had his
work cut out over the 5 kilometres. Someone who had made short work of the
swim was Paul Amey and with his always stellar run it wasn’t long before he
was leading the field on the run to Mission Bay and return. This lead only
got bigger as he burned up the kilometers to take his first win in a Stroke
& Stride since 1997. Brent Foster wasn’t going to let anyone else get past
him and held on for second ahead of another classy runner in Liam Scopes.
The next race is Wednesday, November 22, 2000.

LAKE TO PORT
from Craig Ross
The annual United Networks Lake to Port Corporate Challenge...... a 200
kilometer 8 leg Duathlon from the shores of Lake Taupo to the Port of
Tauranga, Mt Maunganui has attracted the interest of Olympic cyclists Sarah
Ulmer and her Olympian Partner, Team pursuit cyclist Brendon Cameron.
Cameron, building towards the 2001 NZ Ironman will head a strong United
Networks sponsored team.
With entries filling rapidly for the Saturday 18 November event, Race
Director Craig Ross reports that the introduction of the 7 person team
category for the first time has created real interest from the corporate
sector. "it allows a group of company employees or friends to get together
and have a hell of a day out by enduring only one of the selected legs. At
the other end of the scale 7 individual entries, led by Canadian and Hawaii
Ironman age grouper Stephen German and defending woman's individual winner,
Linda van uden will take on the entire event in preparation for NZ Ironman
next March"
The 8th annual Lake to Port Corporate challenge is considered by many as the
ideal 'training' event for the upcoming Sport Bay of Plenty Summer event
series Triathlon season....... cumulating in the Port of Tauranga Half
Ironman to be staged at Mt Maunganui on Saturday 6 January.
The course meanders through some of the most picturesque country side in NZ,
particularly through the Whakamaru and Atiamuri lakes and forest districts.
Just had 1994 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Mark Rendall enter in a
strong 4 person team from Rotorua.
This is a TriNZ approved event.

PAUL AMEY RETURNS TO ICEBREAKER TRIATHLON
From Henry Barfoot
One of New Zealand's top international triathletes, Paul Amey, will be
returning to his roots in the sport when he starts in the Queens Head Tavern
Icebreaker triathlon this Sunday at Narrowneck Beach in Devonport. Paul has
been one of New Zealand's top triathletes over the past decade although he
has been based out of the country for some years, racing in France on the
professional circuit. Following his recent decision to opt for British
nationality in a bid to make the English team for the 2002 Commonwealth
games, it is perhaps appropriate that Paul is returning to race in the site
of his origins in the sport.
Although born in Canterbury, Paul grew up on the North Shore, racing his
first triathons on Browns Bay beach. In 1990 Paul won the Icebreaker race
for the first time while racing as a junior, beating Canadian professional
Frank Clarke (who now organises a number of triathlon series in Auckland).
Also in the 1990 field was another promising junior by the name of Hamish
Carter, who finished seven minutes behind Paul.
Competition for the $1200 in prize money is expected to be provided by last
year's winner Will Smith of Hibiscus Coast and Glenfield's Kieren Doe, who
finished second last weekend in the Junior Elite division of the prestigious
Noosa Triathlon in Queensland. Ex-junior world champion Nathan Richmond may
also be competing over the 750m swim, 18km bike and 4km run.
In the women's field national duathlon champion Nicole Cope of Henderson
will face a strong challenge from top swimmer Vanessa Palmer (20) of
Birkenhead. South African representative Lynley Smith, who recently settled
in Auckland's Browns Bay, is also competing.
Postal entries have now closed but if you wish to put in a late entry then
come along to pre-race registration at the Queens Head Tavern, 396 Queen St,
City this Saturday between 2 and 5pm. Race start is 8am Sunday morning.
This is a TriNZ approved event.
