THUMBS UP FOR DEFENDING NATIONAL MULTISPORT CHAMPIONS
from Ian Hepenstall
New Zealand multisport champions Neil Gellatly (Auckland) and Jill Westenra
(Wellington) took the first step towards defending their titles after
winning the Telecom Local Directories Motu Challenge in Opotiki on Saturday.
The national multisport championships will be decided over four races this
year - the Motu Challenge, Tongariro Classic, Queenstown Goldrush and Coast
to Coast.
Gellatly and Westenra also made it two in a row at the season-opening Motu
Challenge, a $30,000 event comprising a 65km mountain bike to Motu, 17km
bush track run, including crossing the Motu Falls swingbridge, 52km road
cycle, 38km kayak, finishing with a 8km cycle and 3km run back to Opotiki.
The victories came in vastly differing fortunes, with Gellatly overcoming
health problems, a flat tyre and the strong challenges of Tauranga's Steven
Came and Taumarunui's Ben Fouhy.
Westenra, on the other hand, was in a race of her own, with the expected
challenge from 1998 winner and former Coast to Coast champion Kate Callaghan
(Taupo)never eventuating.
It was the first time that Westenra and Callaghan had gone head-to-head and
with both preparing for the Southern Traverse Discovery adventure race in
Canterbury in two weeks, they were unsure of the outcome.
Westenra had a 13-minute advantage after the opening mountain bike, and
never looked back to head the Taupo athlete by nearly an hour. ``I was
quite nervous before the race because my training has been so different and
I had no races coming in to this event,'' Westenra said. ``I had not raced
Kate before, and that added another element.
``My training has been so different because of the needs of an adventure
race over several days. It has all been strength and endurance work.''
Despite this Westenra was eight minutes inside last year's race record
schedule heading on to the kayak leg. However with the Waioeka River running
at only 10 cumecs, the former New Zealand elite duathlon, triathlon and
mountain running representative finished two minutes outside her 1999 record
in 8:41.32. ``I'm thrilled with the result. I certainly had plenty of
strength out there and the cooler conditions were good for racing. ``This
is a good event, with some wonderful scenery and it caters for everyone.''
The 27-year-old Gellatly had significantly different path to the winner's
circle. His five-minute lead after the mountain bike was cut to 1min 30sec
by Tauranga novice Steven Came after the bush run. Came overtook Gellatly
midway through the road cycle but the defending champion reclaimed a
four-minute buffer on to the water with a dare-devil descent from Traffords
Hill. Taumarunui's Ben Fouhy paddled strongly to catch Gellatly at the end
of the kayak, but the Aucklander pushed to a 1min 30sec lead after the 8km
cycle despite riding on a flat tyre.
He extended his advantage on the final 3km run through Opotiki to win in
7:59.39, 2min 33sec clear of Came who overtook a tiring Fouhy at the final
transition. ``I don't know what was wrong. I couldn't keep any food down and
felt terrible on the run,'' Gellatly said.
``Gradually things got better on the bike but I couldn't believe it that I
had a flat tyre when on got for the final bike,'' Gellatly said. ``It was on
ly a short 8km bike so I decided to carry on.'' ``That's the hardest event
I've ever done. Now I have to see a doctor and get sorted out. I really want
to have a big race at the Coast to Coast, but it's no use unless I can sort
out this problem on the run.''

KIWI CLAIMS ITU WORLD AQUATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS:
From Katherine Williams Triathlon Digest www.triathlonlive.com
Cancun, Mexico -- New Zealand's Mathew Reed and Spain's Pilar Hidalgo won
world titles Saturday at the third ITU World Aquathlon Championships, the
first time the race has been held anywhere but Noosa, Queensland, Australia.
There were 137 athletes from 12 countries, including 23 elite male and 8
elite female athletes.
Reed, 24, kept a family tradition going, as his brother, Shane Reed, had won
the first two world titles in Australia. Brazil's Antonio Mansur led a large
pack in the first 2.5k run, but Reed and Brazil's Paulo Miyasiro moved to
the front in the 1000m swim. In the second 2.5k run, Miyasiro passed Reed in
the first kilometer, but Reed surged to retain the third world title for his
family.
Reed won in 28:53, two seconds faster than Miyasiro.
"My brother Shane had a very long season so he encouraged me to come over
here and defend a family title," Reed said. "I especially had to struggle in
the second run. I broke away on time and it paid off, so I won my first
world title."
The aquathlon, which had $7,500 in prize money, opened a week of multisport
racing, which concludes on Sunday with the ITU World Cup finale and a
$50,000 prize purse

KIWIS ON THE PODIUM AT NOOSA AQUATHLON:
From Katherine Williams Triathlon Digest www.triathlonlive.com
The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival kicked off with the Queensland
Aquathlon Championships (2.5k run, 1k swim, 2.5k run). The first event on a
program comprising more than 20 endurance and social events, the Aquathlon
drew 350 participants, with ages ranging from 7 to 67.
After the first run leg, Gold Coast's Paul Mackay held a narrow lead over
New Zealand's Shane Reed (last year's world champion here); three-time
Aussie champ Greg Bennett; Brisbane's Levi Maxwell; and Sydney's Craig
Alexander. Out of the water, Reed and Maxwell led the charge, with early
race leader Mackay in fourth. On the final, flat run leg, Maxwell maintained
his lead, but Mackay made up ground to run into second.
The elite women's field was broken early with 18-year-old Annabel Luxford
dominating the first 2.5km. Hill remained in striking distance and, by the
end of the swim, she had overtaken Luxford -- but still found herself in
second with first-year senior Melanie Mitchell now leading. Mitchell ran
well, but in the end, couldn't hold off the experience of Hill. Hill's win
means she has now won three straight times at Noosa -- and the first two
races (1998, 1999) carried the status of the ITU World Aquathlon
Championship.
