TELECOM LOCAL DIRECTORIES MOTU CHALLENGE CHAMPION GETS SERIOUS
from Ian Hepenstal
Auckland's Neil Gallatly, defending champion in Saturday's Telecom Local
Directories Motu Challenge has decided to get more serious about multisport.
The outstanding 27-year-old has cut back his work duties to give more time
to train for the major multisport events this summer, starting with defence
of his Motu Challenge title at Opotiki on Saturday.
Gallatly is not drawn by the $30,000 in money and prizes up for grabs, but
in an endeavour to reach the top in the sport.
He hopes to dip under eight hours in one of the country's toughest and most
scenic multisport events on Saturday, consisting of a 65km mountain bike,
17km bush track run, including crossing the Motu Falls swingbridge, 52km
cycle, 38km kayak, finishing with a 8km cycle and 3km run to Opotiki.
The Aucklander wants to see how far he can progress in the sport, with his
main focus the Coast to Coast race in February.
``I'd like to make a more serious push and you really need to be a fulltime
athlete to do it, with a few athletes going that way,'' Gallatly said.
``I've cut back to three days on ever eight days, to give myself more time
for better quality training and also more time for rest, to find sponsors,
organise equipment and have the best preparation.''
Gallatly turned his attention to multisport five years ago after a
background in triathlon and duathlon, after taking part in the Head to Head
event in Auckland.
``I loved it and I gave up tris. Now I like to keep my head above water.''
Saturday's race will be a litmus test on his winter training schedule, set
with the help of coach Jon Ackland.
Gallatly won't have things his own way with some stern opposition expected
from an inform Ben Fouhy (Taumarunui), Steve Knowles (Auckland), Craig
Stevens (Taupo), Gordon Blythen (Auckland) and Oscar Stielau (Auckland).
There will also be interest in the performance of Australian Evan McRae, a
favourite for the veteran men's honours.
Gallatly was second in 1998 and went one better last year, building on a
record time in the daunting first mountain bike leg.
Steven was third in 1998 and is back fully fit after withdrawing with injury
last year, while Stielua, third last year, is enjoying a great year, winning
the inaugural Loop event in the Waikato last weekend.
The women's race looks to be a battle between Wellington's Jill Westenra and
Taupo's Kate Callaghan. Westenra, former national duathlon champion, will
defend her title, after also winning the Coast to Coast and Tongariro
Challenge.
Callaghan, the 1998 Coast to Coast winner, withdraw with an injury on the
mountainbike section last year. She won the recent Peak to Pub race near
Christchurch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The man who helped design the MOTU course, and local Eastern Bay of Plenty
legend Neil Jones will be one face missing. The two-time winner, second to
Gallatly last year, is taking a break because of work commitments following
his return from the Eco Challenge in Borneo two months ago.

TEAM MEMBER REQUIRED
From: Jane townsend
Gary,
I was wondering if I could use your contacts to try and find a kayaker for
the Motu challenge. The river is grade 2+ and is 29km long. The kayaker also
has to complete an 8km cycle and a 3km run. Do you know of anyone-PLEASE!
Thanks, Jane

DUATHLON WORLDS
an age groupers perspective from Peter Ellis
Hi Gary.............it was a great trip with all getting along well... only
a couple of members didn't stay with the team in Calais..
the age groupers had a tough little course with some good hills.. not high
but seemed to go on for ages.. john , Daniel and Samantha had great races
and we can be proud of them.. I think Daniel still has a smile on his
face...
Anna filer although 4th of 4 in her grade can be pleased that she finished
the race.. she was one of several who caught a bug and spent a couple of
days in bed... she looked shocking in her first run and it is a credit to
her that she continued on..
another to really get the bug bad was graham stone who completed his run
up with the leaders but was then pulled from the race after he had to stop
on the bike to be sick.... didn't see much of the rest as I was too busy
chasing them..
sundays elite races started in rain and Amanda was going well although a
little behind the top four when she punctured.. the top four in this race
really looked classey... in the junior men we saw some great running by
Jonathon and Terrnzo to be in touch for most of the first run.. Jonathon
then cycled his heart out but fell away in the last run to be passed by
Terrnzo..
I would ear mark both these two as real stars of the future....
in the womens race both Fiona and Nicole had good races.. just needed to
make the first bunch in the cycle to be real medal prospects. didn't see
much of mark's race but he was right there all the way.. be interesting to
see how the elites would fare without drafting or alternatively if they
competed on the same 40km cycle course as the age groupers where perhaps you
would see the odd breakaway on some of the hills or technical parts of the
course....
unfortunately the off course organisation of the french was not up to
scratch...registration was a shambles, there were no souvenirs and they did
little to promote their country or products to overseas competitors.. not a
patch on Huntersville last year...
