BEVAN DOCHERTY (NZL) WINS THE ETU CUP CROWN
3rd place in the international Alanya triathlon on Wednesday October 18th
enabled Bevan Docherty to secure the overall European Triathlon crown for
2000.
18 year old Nicola Spirig and Kazakstan's Dmitry Gaag were the days race
winners in the International Alanya Triathlon, the final event in the 2000
ETU Triathlon tour.
The men's race turned to a 10km run. After the swim held without wetsuits ,
Rasmus Henning/DEN led the field into the first transition, closely followed
by Andriy Glushchenko/UKR, Igor Sisoev/RUS and Martin Krnavek/CZE, Bevan
Docherty and Mathew Reed of NZL along with all the other top contenders.
Xavier Le Floch/FRA and Dominik Rechsteiner/SUI, who were both 1minute
10secs behind.
On the bike, the 3 groups that had left the transition area quickly merged
into one big pack of 30 athletes. Matthew Reed on his break away from this
inactive group suffered a flat tyre and had to stop the race.
After the second transition, the race was really on, Dmitry Gaag led a
group of 4, with Docherty, Henning and Leonid Ivanov/RUS - the U23 European
Champion - into the second of the 2 laps. Gaag being determined to
not only to finish, but also to win this race, after 2 failures in the last
years, outsprinted Ivanov and led him take silver, ahead of Docherty and
Rasmus.
Spirig was 1 minute down after the 1500m swim: Lucie Zelenkova/CZE, Nina
Anisimova/RUS, Leanda Cave/GBR and Anja Heil/GER led the swim. Annie
Emmerson was 30 secs behind Spirig.
Spirig extended the margin by 1 minute during the first 10km lap of the flat
bike course.
Her effort brought her to the front pack in a group of six, that managed to
secure a 2 minutes lead at the end of the 40 km bike .
Emmerson run overshadowed all the other women - she ran 1 minute faster
than anybody else in the first of 5km lap. Emmerson kept going in the second
lap, passing one by one all competitors, but was unable to oversprint Spirig.
Anisimova had been challenging Spirig for almost 7km, who finally double
golded the cup final and the overall series title.
Final ranking in the ETU Triathlon Cup 2000:
1- Bevan Docherty NZL 490pts
2- Rasmus Henning DEN 465

KIWI PRO TOUR TRIAL
from Ken McLaren
Hyland and Richmond show the way....
A little ahead of time the New Zealand triathlon season got underway
yesterday with the trial race for the inaugural Air New Zealand Triathlon
Pro tour.
Sixteen of the twenty spots in the men's and women's fields were up for
grabs with the remaining four spots in the field being used for wild card
entries.
Held over 300m swim, 12km bike and 3km run the draft legal trial race was
hotly contested although the weather was cool. Although no points for the
series were on offer in these trial races, kudos was at stake and the
prestigious number one slot going into the series, which starts in six weeks
time.
Out of the water Gisborne's, Michelle Hyland joined Vanessa Palmer and
Brook Pattle at the front. These three youngsters worked well together
opening up a good lead on the deceptively tough bike loop.
As they started the 3km run it was Michelle Hyland who was the strongest,
coming home to win the race, secure her position in the series and take the
number 1 ranking.
In the men's event Nathan Richmond and Fielding's Kieren Doe (who is now
based in Auckland) opened up an unassailable lead as they two upped around
the windy bike course.
Richmond lost no time in running out an easy winner and like Hyland goes
into the series with the number one ranking.
Subject to official confirmation and contracts, the fields will be made up
of the following athletes.

CAPE TO BLUFF RACE
from Michael Jacques
Stop the Press !!!! Announcing The NZ Wild Places Challenge, a 28 day
multisport race from Bluff to Cape Rienga in November 2001. Disciplines
will include running, mountain biking, road cycling, kayaking, and even
rafting.
We have a budget of 1 Million Dollars and are at the point where we are
confident of covering that cost. We have secured television coverage,
nationally and internationally, and a group of sponsors who are wildly
enthusiastic. $130,000 worth of prizes is up for grabs...
The event will be launched in November 2000. We are intending to manage our
communication and race information via an internet site. At the event
launch we will provide registration of interest forms with our full race
packs being available through the race website. This material will not be
available until the launch.
There are a large number of details for both competitors and race organisers
that we are working on. If you have specific queries, please let us know
and we will attempt to answer them, but as the government says - "The big
picture will become clear very soon."
If you are intending to do this event in a year's time, take some advice and
start training. We expect the winner to be averaging approximately six hours
racing per day!
Performance Lab will be helping us with programmes in this regard.
The event will be run during November/December 2001, starting immediately
after the Southern Traverse. We have no choice in this regard and you will
need to make a decision for yourself on which event you want to attend.
There is no other time of the year that would be suitable for both weather
and logistics, not to mention we'll all be needing that Christmas break
afterward.
Our detailed course description will follow next week. For a sneak preview
visit www.sportzhub.co.nz
Spread the word - an epic adventure on the way.

KONA, THE RACE ..... IN THE SLIP STREAM
By Stacy Sims
That was the hottest, hardest, most soul wretching demoralixzing thing I
have ever done in my life. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Swim:
wasnt' as bad as everyone says. didn't get crushed or anything until i got
to the swim turnaround--got kicked in the gut and lost my cookies--yep!
threw up in the water! sorry for those behind me!!!
The Bike:
well, where should i begin.... the first twenty miles were sweet... but then
the winds picked up.
Wasn't so bad at first... it wasn't unlike a moderate northerly on the
motorway.... but then! DUDE!!! people were getting blown off the road,
across the road (and it wasn't just us the punters! it was the pros as
well!) NOTHING, I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING prepared any of us for those
winds. evidently race management was freaking out as well because people
were getting off their bikes and walking bits of the course.
me---well, yep. it broke me. we all know how often i get blown off my bike
in welly town..(several scars to prove it!) but when a girl on a sweet red
Kestrel in front of me flew up into the air still attached to her
bike--landing on the guard rail on the side of the road.. i stopped (didn't
take much to stop seeing i was probably going 5 miles an hour!) unclipped,
tried to hold my bike on the ground (as it was being taken by the wind!) and
started crying. that was it for me. no longer did time matter, just
finishing the bike course (hell, at this point i didn't care about anything
let alone running..). i was terrified to continue riding but being out in
the middle of no where meant i either had to sit on the side of the road
indefinitely or get back on and try to continue. and it was a long ride
back.
Didn't know where the winds were going to come, didn't know how far out i
was/how far it was to T2.... it was a long long frustrating day....
The Run:
was really slow so it wasn't painful. i knew i was gonna be out there for a
long time so i decided to have as much "fun" as possible. so i walked every
aid station, made jokes, danced with a few people, chatted along
the way.. of course it was long and hard, but not nearly as painful as
Taupo--could also be cos it took 30 mins longer!! (but I get to give away
the Soup Bowl P1 !). It was hot, don't think it wasn't. It was the hottest
day on record in recent history (go figure?!! just like IM NZ!!) I got so
sunburned my legs are blistering. But the heat was the least of my worries
that day.
All in all the course isn't too too bad.. aside from the heat, the wind and
the endless sameness of the terrain... it wouldn't have been that bad (in
other words, the hills t'aint all that).
but i vowed yesterday never to do Kona again, and i still feel the same way
today. ...
On a lighter note--was cool to see the pros in action. Saw Lori running in
(as i was heading out--how frustrating is that?!) and Joanna Zeiger who
placed 4th in the Olympics finished 5th yesterday--now she's an
Ironwoman! she rocks!!!
Peter Ried and Tim DeBoom--both smooth fast gliders for runners--ah! to
only have some of their genetics...
So now i'm chillin in Hawaii (i guess 'Chillin' isn't the operative word!)
for the next few days then back to welly town.
so. that's me.
not gonna even think about training for a while!
catch you all later!
out-
Stacey

Down river Kayak bits required
Hi there....
I'm trying to get into this kayaking game and am starting to realise that
it's a fairly expensive exercise. Was wondering if any of you have any gear
you'd like to sell. I pretty much need everything except for a kayak.
I'm looking for a roof rack / kayak rack.. paddle (216cm) spraydeck
(Elimantor size), helmet, buoyancy vest and anything else you think I may
need.
Thanks very much..
