(Sunday French time). Although they couldn't match yesterday's medal-winning performances of their age group compatriots, the elite team of six finished with one top ten and three top twenty performances in the four races held today. Taupo's Fiona Docherty was the best performed finishing eighth in the women's elite race with Auckland's Nicole Cope finishing close behind her in 13 place. Mark Bailey of Christchurch finished 18th in a hard fought and tightly contested men's elite race. Marks efforts were even more meritorious considering most of his field are professional athletes. In the junior men's race Dunedin medical student Jonathan Minton ran an astonishing 30min and 51 sec first 10 km and stayed with the leaders throughout the 40km bike ride. Jonathan's efforts on the cycle took their toll however and he faded to 28th on the last 5km run. Meanwhile Terenzo Bozzone, a 16 year old student from Auckland overcame sickness during the first run to post one of the quickest second 5km runs to finish 18th in his first world championships. New Zealand's only junior female, Amanda West from Nelson was in the top ten when she suffered a puncture on the bike ride and had to withdraw. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ New Zealand Duathletes Win Medals at the World Championships in France from TriNZ Exec board member Geoff Mathews New Zealand age group athletes won a gold and two silver medals on the first day of the World Duathlon Championships held in Calais, France on Saturday (French time). John Downey a sport business lecturer at Massey University lead from start to finish to win the gold medal in the 70 plus age group, in a time that would have placed him on the podium in the 60 year old age group! "I wanted to control the race from the start and so I went out hard for the first ten kilometers," John said. His tactics worked perfectly as his opposition found themselves staring at an empty road and with too large a deficit to ever trouble the former Oceania veterans 1500 meter and steeplechase champion. Daniel Clout from Manawatu was a standout performer in the 16 to 19 age group. After running a person best time of 32 minutes for the first ten kilometers, he kept in contact with the leader the whole race eventually finishing less than 2 minutes behind and with a huge 8 minute lead over his next rival. "This was my first World Championships and my finest performance to date, this gives me huge incentive and motivation for the future," Daniel said. Samantha Warriner a PE teacher from Whangerai was elated with her second place finish in the 20 to 29 year age group. Samantha who had played down her own ability on the bike before the race battled for the lead on the bike before cementing her second place on the final run. "A silver medal at my first world championships was beyond my wildest dreams, it has really blown me away," she said. The World Duathlon Championships consists of a 10km run, followed by a 40km bike and then another 5km run. Over 1200 age group athletes competed on the first day of the championships. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A NOTE ABOUT DANIEL CLOUT Daniel is an avid Tri Update reader. Run over an 8km kayak, 30km cycle, 8km run format, Richard Ussher dominated up front after stepping out of his kayak with a two minute lead that he held all the way to the finish. Murray Doughty filled second with multisport newcomer Angus Wood showing off his running skills to nab 3rd with the day's fastest run split (30:14). The day's fastest cycle and kayak splits belonged to team athletes Darren Gordon (51:12) and Mike Read (38:19), but their efforts proved in vain as the consistency of team MGM (Michael Jacques, Geoff keenan, Mike Sim) came through to take first place in the teams. Another to stand out was Carlene Mcdonald, who's 32:32 was 5th fastest run overall - but then Carlene is a national rep and had only returned home a week earlier from playing a part in NZ's team victory at the world mountain running champs. Trish Coley was all by herself in the women's race, winning by seven minutes from Sue de Jong, as were Neils Madsen and Susie Wood in the duathlon option race. Neils put away guys 15 years his younger, while Susie put plenty of guys to shame with fourth place overall. One of the guys Susie's put away was partner Gary Milbank who competing in the cycle and run in a team clocked a slower cycle than his fairer house-mate. Gazza managed to claw back time on the run though, which I guess makes him their in-house duathlon champion! So, weather aside a very successful event. Thanks to sponsors Gu energy products, VIC Cycles, J'Ville Cycles, Mainly Tramping & Ferg's Rock N Kayak. Thanks also to the Hutt Multisport Club who supplied marshals and equipment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEW SERVICE Michael Jacques is now doing a small email news service which just covers the Wellington scene. I am looking for home stay for Feb. and Mar. I am twice a sub 12hr Ironman and looking to go 10hr. i have swam with the masters of Salmon Arm but usually swim in the freshwater lake, shusuap. the bike rides go from green mtn cycle which houses national level mtn./road bike riders. One question if you know what will the rain fall and temp. be on the n. island in nov. and dec. for bike touring? my goal is to race i.m. California and train and race short course alot in Dec. Jan. Feb. I would like some feedback, any is appreciated! Thanks Steve. sdgerman@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A NOTE FROM DEAN Hi there, Sunday I raced the final race in this years North American Triathlon series. The race was hosted by the plush Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fl. The race drew a small but strong field of 20 pros. I had a terrible swim in the alligator infested waters and entered transition last, about 4 mins down on the leaders. I injured my shoulder last Monday and was forced to take painkillers to see me through the swim. I rode strong and by the end of the hilly bike course I had worked my way up into 5th place, about 10seconds ahead of Andrew Noble who was racing for the first time in 2 months since injuring his back in France. I ran hard and maintained a max pace for the first 5km where I was caught by Andrew. I managed to hold off any further attacks from behind and finished in 6th place, one place better than last years series finale. For now, that is the end of my 2000 season - 20 races later! - There is a possibility of racing early next month. I am due to head back to the cold and possible snow of Wisconsin tomorrow, a total contrast to the humidity and 90+(32c) temps here in Florida. I must express my sincere gratitude to all those who have been there and helped me out throughout my long hard season. Thank you all, without the support of such people my season would have had an early end. Until next time take care and keep in touch. Dean Jagusch ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A NOTE FROM SIRI Hi Gary, Just wanted to drop you a line to say how much I appreciate your support. I really do consider New Zealand like a second home in that, when I am training there, it feels as close to home as anywhere. The kiwis are just awesome, and have always treated me as one of their own. So, New Zealand, you will always have me as one of your biggest fans. All the best, Siri Lindley ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tri Updates are bought to you in association with : * Leppin Sport - http://www.leppinsport.com assisting sports people in being the best they possibly can be |
