DOCHERTY & REED IN TOP 5
Kiwis featured prominently in the latest round of the ETU triathlon Cup
raced over a sprint distance
In the men’s race, Rasmus Henning (DEN) was first off the water in 9.14 min,
closely followed by Germany’s pair Dirk Bockel and Thorsten Abel, Cup leader
Kiwi's Bevan Docherty and Matthew Reed followed by Czech star Martin
Krnavek, and Kazakh Dmitry Gaag. Gaag recently placed 4th at the Sydney
Olympics triathlon.
A group formed in front, from which Docherty managed to emerge in the last
lap, to start the 5km run (two laps through downtown Funchal) with a 20-s
lead over Gaag, Henning and Krnavek. Docherty almost made it,
only yielding to Gaag’s phenomenal run in the finish straight.
Docherty still leads the ETU series going into the grand final scheduled in
Alanya/Turkey on October 18.

BUT I'M TOO YOUNG TO TAKE UP COACHING
Don't kid yourself - many top coaches are younger than you think. Brendon
Downey is one of NZ's top coaches and is still in his 20's. At the last
TriNZ level 1 coaching course the average age was well under 30.
You could be doing some coaching and still compete yourself.
32 year old Lance Watson has received a lot of attention since an athlete he
coaches, Simon Whitfield, won the Olympic Gold Medal.
Lance's Current Athletes include:
Simon Whitfield, Olympic Gold Medallist
Lisa Bentley, Ironman New Zealand Champion 2000
Melissa Spooner, three Ironman victories including Ironman New Zealand 1999
Greg Bennett, Australian Triathlon Champ
Sharon Donnelly, Olympian and Pan Am Games Champion
Jamie Cleveland, Canadian Olympic Distance Champ
Tereza Macel, Canadian Olympic Distance Champ
Andrew Noble, 1999 USTS Champ, World Duathlon Champ
Mark Bates, Canadian Long Course Champ
Cheryl Murphy, Canadian Duathlon Champ
So what is preventing you from becoming a coach. Age is not the answer so
why not think about getting onto a level 1 Triathlon coaching course in teh
near future.
If you are interested in doing a coaching course let us know your name and
where you live. We will collate the list of interested names and forward on
to TriNZ. Notify your interest to riverpro@wave.co.nz or to
admin@triathlon.org.nz
Thanks to www.duathlon.com for the info on Lance Watson

RECORD ENTRIES PREDICTED
An encouraging early response to the Air New Zealand Ironman 2001 means
entries are approximately 30 percent ahead of the same time last year.
Remember the 2000 race had record entries. It looks like it is only a
question of when the record will be broken.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Things I gave up for Ironman:
20 lbs of fat, booze filled weekends, hangovers, 30 bpm on my resting pulse,
a weak image of my physical self and a lot of body hair
Savour the journey. It's not what you give up, it's what you gain!
