OLYMPIC GLORY
by Nick Munting
There's been so much written re the Olympic Triathlon that I'm not going to
say so much. However, the sport was very much a winner over the weekend of
October 16/17 and despite the lack of medals for Australia (go Michellie!),
the overall results were sensational for the sport in terms of global
recognition.
The whole world claimed Simon Whitfield's win on the Sunday. Born in South
Africa, an Aussie father, educated in Sydney but very much a proud Canadian,
Simon was the dream winner and a major surprise to many.
That he is a most modest, fun loving and dedicated athlete who will make the
ultimate Olympic Gold medal ambassador is not lost on the world's media!
The Swiss women were superb, while the heroic effort of Michellie Jones will
long be remembered in triathlon circles.
A big thank you though, as in most events, to the myriad volunteers and
officials who backed up the event management by Dave Hansen and his crew. So
many people worked to make the Games a success, in particularly in that open
medal event, triathlon.
While nothing is certain in regard to triathlon's future in the games, there
is already talk of raising the field to 150 in Greece. Now if a great course
can be found in or near Athens, TV ratings proving a winner and with the
IOC's blessing our sport may be a permanent part of the Olympic movement.

HOME WANTED
I may need to move to Auckland for approximately three months over the
summer with my husband and daughter. I wonder if anyone needs either a
house-sitter or would like to swap for our lovely victorian villa in
Dunedin. I'll look after the house, garden and pets (and I keep a lovely
clean house!), and they can have mine in exchange.
Or, any other suggestions about reasonably priced two bed-room
accommodations for a short term rental would be appreciated.

GLENFIDDICH
from Ian Carr
No, not to drink but it will make you feel good!!! Glenfiddich Deer Farms
Velvet has been shown in testing at Otago Med School/AgResearch to be of the
finest quality and purity of any deer velvet available.
Personally, for me it was a big part in my completing the Coast to Coast
Longest Day this year. Recovery from training & enhanced immune system after
starting on Glenfiddich was very noticeable. As you are probably aware many
world-leading NZ athletes take velvet and performance effects have been
scientifically proven. For your supplies of this amazing training &
performance aid or for further information, send me an e-mail at
carr@xtra.co.nz.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
There is no better symbol of the games than that [Olympic] flame. It is
dynamic, light, heat, it burns like the passion every athlete feels for
their sport.

INTERBIKE 2000
from Peter Clode.
Las Vegas. What thoughts come to mind when you hear that name. Casino’s,
gambling and lots of bright lights and smoky halls. It’s the last place you
would imagine there to be the worlds largest bicycle expo. Getting in was
difficult but after persuading some close friends and volunteering to work
for free I managed to get all the credentials and ID needed to get me
through the door. Inside the Las Vegas convention centre there was a mass of
stalls and hundreds upon hundreds of company employees buzzing around trying
to get everything ready for opening.
Interbike is an international expo put on by the big companies for the
retailers and media only. 9 am came around and thousands of retailers and
media people converged on the main hall, which held I would suggest between
3 to 4, hundred different stalls. A non-stop flow of people came into the
expo and even just moving around at times proved difficult. The expo ran
from 9 am till 6 pm for four days straight, almost enough time to get around
all of the different company’s.
So what’s new?
Well when I did manage to pull myself away from our stand for a few minutes
I did get to see a few cool bits and pieces. You can expect to see all the
new models of bikes from all the main manufacturers including Trek, Giant,
Litespeed, Cannondale, Specialized etc. All of which had a few new changes
for 2001, the most common of which is the new oversized headtube and
headset. This lowers the profile and allows the headset to be entirely
enclosed within the headtube. Other common similarities included full carbon
forks and head tubes on all of the top end models. Trek’s new OCLV 110 comes
in a new lighter package with oversize head tube and in a lighter carbon
matrix, with a frame weight of 1.0 kg it’s lightest stock frame ever made
(Remember Lance rode it in the tour) it should be available next year. I
searched high and low for lighter frames and I was surprised. Some a small
Italian company came in at the lightest at 880 grams (Scandium), Calfree a
lugged carbon frame came in slightly heavier at 903 grams. Other frames of
interest were Trek’s soon to be in production time trial frame (yep the same
one that Lance rode). Limited production and in one size only!
On to parts! What’s new for 2001? Well the main groupsets look set to stay
the same for next year. Easton came to the innovation party with an
exceptionally cool set of full carbon drop handlebars that weight in at a
scant 195 grams. ITM also was invited with their new 95-gram magnesium stem,
as was Selle Italia with its new saddle weighing in at 145 grams. None of
these parts come cheap, so start saving. Oakley came with their new glasses
that look like they were straight out of alien. Several other companies came
with their new pedal designs and new wheel setups. Polar have a new heart
rate monitor that will cook you breakfast as well as show your heart rate,
temperature, altitude, cadence, speed etc etc etc.
Well even though I didn’t have enough time to get around the whole expo it
was a great experience. I did see several NZ distributors there so with a
bit of luck some of this stuff may be making its way down to NZ.
So what will we see in 2001? Scooters. Yep they are taking over the US! Time
to go buy stocks. I wish you all safe training and good bye for now from San
Diego.
