SHELDRAKE QUALIFIES FOR WORLD FINAL IN IRONMAN DEBUT
from Ian Hepenstal
Gisborne triathlete Stephen Sheldrake qualified for the world Ironman
triathlon championships after finishing seventh in his debut at Ironman
Canada today.
Sheldrake, a New Zealand representative at the world championships over the
Olympic distance, moved up in distance this year.
He overcame driving rain and cold conditions to claim seventh, and the final
spot for the world final in seven seeks in Kona, Hawaii, although Sheldrake
is yet to decide if he will enter.
He was fourth out of the 3.8km swim and retained his place with a strong
5:00.06 for the 180km cycle. Sheldrake held off the challenges with a
3.10.13 marathon.
Taupo’s Bryan Rhodes struggled in the cold conditions and withdrew midway
through the run, while Tauranga’s Andrew Vane recorded a top 40 finish of
9:40.18 on debut.
Taupo’s Tara-Lee Marshall, who won Ironman Switzerland three weeks ago, was
disqualified for a centre-line infringement on the bike.
The race was won by world champion husband-and-wife duo of Peter Reid and
Lori Bowden on their home course at Penticton, British Columbia. Reid won in
8:29.49 while Bowden, the defending world champion, followed up her win in
Ironman Australia earlier in the year with another stunning performance. She
finished with a 3:02.15 marathon to clock, just 12 minutes slower than her
husband, who set the fastest time of 2:50.59.

SUBARU IRONMAN CANADA PRIZEGIVING
Lori Bowden gave a $1,000 check to the top Canadian woman in the 18-24 age
group to help pay her way to Ironman Hawaii. It is no wonder Bowden is so
popular in Canada.
They told us during the awards that someone had cut the ropes holding the
swim buoys the night before the race. An overnight effort was required to
reset all the buoys in place - the swim took place next morning with no
competitors ever being aware of what happened.
The age group Kiwis assembled for a group photo under a huge sized Canada
flag - should look great in our photo albums.
After the prizegiving most people went home. The Kiwis and the Aussies
Pro's and Age Groupers ) were a dominant force at "The Element" nightclub
for the post awards celebrations until early the next morning.
