NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS MULTISPORT CHAMPS
from Ian Hepenstal
Bethelhem College's Josh Dyer suffered a painful cramp that cost him any
chance of a unique treble on Saturday.
After wins in the New Zealand secondary school triathlon and duathlon, Dyer
was forced to withdraw during the kayak leg of the national multisport
championships on the Wairoa River, a stone's throw from his school.
With Dyer out of the running, outstanding Auckland athlete Clark Ellice
claimed his first national title with an emphatic performance.
He led a one-two finish for Auckland Grammar athletes, with school mate
James Elvery second.
Gisborne's Michelle Hyland added the girls honours to her national schools
triathlon title earlier in the year for the 500m kayak, 10km bike, 5km run
event.
Both Ellice and Hyland stretched their leads to win by significant margins.
Ellice passed a cramping Mark Stephenson (Rangitoto) in transition from the
kayak, building up a 1min 30sec after the testing bike course, and cleared
out to win by nearly five minutes.
``I loved the whole race. The course was fantastic. It was just awesome,''
the 17-year-old Ellice said.
The Aucklander, with a background in surf lifesaving and swimming, turned to
triathlon three years ago, finishing sixth in the junior age group race at
the world championships in Perth this year.
Despite winning a multisport event, he is adamant his future lies in
triathlon.
``This is fun, for sure. But the future is definitely in triathlons. There's
just not the races in multisport, but there's a path to the Olympics in
triathlon.''
Hyland was equally impressive in the girls race. She trailled Takapuna's
Clare Mandeno out of the kayak but was quickly in command in the bike leg
and cruised away from the field to win by a whopping 14 minutes.
The junior titles were won by the super-talented Rangotito College athlete
Terenzo Bozzone and Epsom Grammar's Jade Gilbertson. Bozzone, who made it a
clean sweep after winning the national junior collegiate duathlon and
triathlon titles, will compete in the world duathlon championships in Europe
next month.

CANTERBURY DUATHLON CHAMPS
from Graham Jackson
For Olympic triathlete Ben Bright to comment post-race "He's running hot at
the moment", you know someone has done exceedingly well.
Bright should know: he had just followed National Duathlon Champ Mark Bailey
around the course for close to an hour 40 minutes in the Canterbury Duathlon
Champs.
For Bright, the race was a tune-up forming part of his training for Sunday
17 September in Sydney, while Bailey was treating the race in a similar
fashion as he works towards the World Duathlon Champs in France in early
October.
The race, held over a 4-42-6 format used the same course as last season's
Championship race - a run around the Lyttelton area, ride to Halswell on the
outskirts of Christchurch, then a run also finishing in Halswell.
Under grey skies, calm conditions and 7 degrees, competitors lined up for
the last duathlon in the region for the season.
Most were there to see the duel between Bailey and Bright, and on their
return to transition after the first run, it was Bailey who held a 10 second
advantage. Onto the bike and Bailey scampered away through the very
demanding technical section that is Lyttelton Harbour. Up and over Gebbies Pass
and there had been no change, Bailey slightly extending his lead.
Onto the flat, and 25ks to go, and the two hammered it out, with, as it
turned out, no reward for Bright. Having increased his lead by another
minute on the bike, Bailey was unable to let up for the final run. Although
Bright had a faster second-run split, it was not enough to challenge Bailey
for first place.
Karyn Ballance, working towards the final stages of training for Hawaii
Ironman, was untroubled in the women's section of the race. Ballance had
over a minute lead at the end of the first run, and continued to extend that
lead, over eventual second place Catherine Wall, on both the bike and second
run.
Results - Men
1. Mark Bailey 1.40.04
2. Ben Bright 1.41.13
3. Nic Kay 1.51.29
Results - Women
1. Karyn Ballance 2.02.27
2. Catherine Wall 2.14.53
3. Mary Jones 2.20.32

NORTH HARBOR STUFF
EGG DUATHLON & OLYMPIC BRUNCH
Sunday 18th September marks two historic firsts - the first men's triathlon
at the Olympics, ever, and the first North Harbour Triathlon Club Egg
Duathlon, ever. Come along for this fun training day and then sojourn to the
Queens Head Tavern (just up from Aotea Square) to watch the race on the big
screen with other clubbies. A special triathlete brunch will be available
for $15. Meet at Teal Park at 8am with your bike and running shoes for the
duathlon, or 10am at the Queens Head for brunch. If you are interested
please let Shiralee know (shiralee@xtra..co.nz or 443 0956) by this weekend
to confirm numbers.
NHTC AQUATHONS - GET WET FOR LESS
Aquathons start again October 19 at The Strand, Takapuna Beach. The format
remains the same as last year, swim 500m/1000m then run 3km on the beach,
once a fortnight on Thursdays. The format makes these great events for
beginners so if you have any friends or colleagues who are getting
interested in this triathlon nonsense please let them know about these!
Entry forms will be available soon. At $6 a race these are already one of
the best value events in Auckland, however if you enter in advance you can
race all 9 races for only $36. That could work out to as cheap as 0.1 cents
per metre!
New to the Aquathons this year will be full race results and three "fun"
points series (no prizes, just race for honour and to beat your mates).
Points will be scored for top three placings in three categories - open,
junior (16 and under) and veteran (women over 40, men over 45). We predict
some close competition in all age groups.

SHELDRAKE WINS IN HONG KONG
from Ailsa Cuthbert
A week after coming 7th in his first Ironman, Stephen Sheldrake battled
fatigue, heat and jet-lag to win the Macau International Triathlon by 50
seconds over Chinese and Japanese rivals. After coming out of the water
first Sheldrake said he concentrated on putting time into the chasing pack
on the bike (which included his brother Brent who finished 5th overall in a
time of 2:08) as he knew the run would be hard. In 100 degree heat and
humidity his lead was cut down but Sheldrake won in a time of 2:03. The
woman's race was won by Hong Kong's Jill Fung in 2:14. Jill is one of the
best female triathletes in Asia. Sheldrake is now taking a well deserved
rest before starting training again. His next race will likely be the Port
of Tauranga 1/2 Ironman in January.

Invitation to all athletes to come and train with Runaway Bay Tri-Training
Squad
Rod Cedaro & Brendon Downey are pleased to announce the launch of the
Runaway Bay Tri-Training Squad, catering to triathletes from all levels,
at what we believe is the best facility and location for triathlon training
in the World - The Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre
The Centre has an Olympic quality Mondo 400m track with timing lights that
can be set to a predetermined pace, a 50m outdoor 8 lane swimming pool with
underwater viewing facilities, a fully equipped gym, on-site food hall, and
accommodation to sleep up to 500 people. We also have access to a first class
sport science and medicine department including sports doctors,

Our philosophy is to provide each athlete with a programme that is specific
and appropriate to his or her goals while utilising the power of a squad
training situation. The programme will not be structured around the best
athletes in the squad with everyone else trying to keep up.
We invite athletes, and their coaches, from around the world to come and
