Really beautiful city and a big change from St Moritz. Temperature and crowd wise. Cutting to the chase it was a successful weekend for most of the kiwis and a good indication that things are going to plan. The womens race had a small but quality field with many wanting a last hit out before the games. This was the last world cup on the circuit prior to Sydney so it was good to see what needed working on and what was going well. I came out in the 1st swim pack which was really pleasing, being a non wetsuit swim and a smaller field, it's sometimes easy to fall between the gaps and miss a pack but had my eye on michelle Jones most of the swim and exited with her which is usually a good sign. A good transition saw me stay in the lead pack (about 8 athletes) while we dropped a few who were hanging on, straight up out of the transition into a 3 - 4km climb so no time to muck around! We were chasing Magali Messmer who exited 40 sec ahead and although on her own managed to stay ahead until the conclusion of the cycle. Onto the run and it was all on. Some of the favourites were in a pack behind maybe 2 min down so it was there for the taking. I was pretty unsure how things would go but into the run and I felt good. The feeling I'd had in the same race 2 years ago was back and to my surprise I was pushing the front markers. The on form American, Siri Lindley bolted out of transition and we didn't see her again but you could have thrown a blanket over the next 4 of us in the hunt. Leading the 3 lap chase was Aussie Michelle Jones and another Swiss olympic athlete with good current form Brigette McMahon closely followed by the Belgium Kathleen Smet and yours truly. About midway I managed to drop Kathleen and started making ground on Michelle, who I had reeled in by the end of lap 2. I was now entering new territory, Michelle is the one athlete I have never run in front of let alone beaten so I was trying to stay calm and focus on pushing harder. However, with a kilometer to go she kicked and although I did everything I could to stay with her I wasn't able to close the gap and she piped me for a podium by 10 sec. And that was the day! My best world cup result in 2 years and I felt strong - all good. A sub 37 run split to boot so that made the day! I'm still pretty excited about it and it's nice to go into the next 2 weeks of hard work knowing that I'm heading in the right direction. Later in the day the boys also pulled out big races to finish 2nd and 3rd (Hamish 2nd, Craig 3rd) so there was plenty to celebrate that night. The men's run was very exciting, with the lead changing hands various times. Simon Lessing dropped out in the first lap. We had a big dinner , meeting up with some other kiwis who were in town to watch the race, just like home away from home! Today we had a squiz around the Olympic Museum (Inspiring stuff) before trekking home. Once again thanks for all the wishes of good luck and support - they all make a difference. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ITU WORLD CUP-LAUSANNE: from Katherine Williams Triathlon Digest www.triathlonlive.com Saturday's ITU World Cup-Lausanne was the second straight win in the event for Britain's Andrew Johns, but the first-ever ITU World Cup win for American Siri Lindley. Johns triumphed over a field heavy with those headed to the Olympics. Two of the 16 men's DNF casualties were Britain's Simon Lessing and Kazakstan's Dimitry Gaag. The race was the last of the World Cups before the Olympic races in Sydney on September 16-17. Lindley, who is America's Olympic alternate, was the fourth triathlete to win a World Cup this summer who is not racing in the Olympics. The others before her were Chris Hill (Tokyo), Rina Hill (Tokyo) and Barb Lindquist (Corner Brook). Switzerland's Sydney-bound Magali Messmer was the early swim leader by 40 seconds, and maintained a 30-second lead off the bike as well. Lindley took the lead on the run at the end of the second lap, while the other Swiss sensation, Brigitte McMahon, moved into second. Australia's Michellie Jones, who had been an uncharacteristic 15th out of the swim, also passed Messmer late in the run for third place. In the men's race, Johns pushed the pace on the run along with the two Kiwis who ended up second and third, Hamish Carter and Craig Walton. Both Lessing and Gaag pulled out after the first of three laps. ITU World Cup-Lausanne August 12, Lausanne, Switzerland 1.5k S, 40k B, 10k R Men 1. Andrew Johns (GBR), 1:52:36 (no splits); 2. Don't overlook the performance of Bevan Docherty in his first ever ITU world cup race. the Taupo kid proves he can play seriously with the rock stars. Nice to see Siri Linley ( a tri update reader ) claim a world cup win. Remember Siri has raced often in NZ including a win some years ago at the First Light triathlon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ STRONG PERFORMANCE FROM STRONG AT POWERMAN EMMENTAL Aaron Strong has made an impressive International duathlon debut with a solid fourth placing at Powerman Emmenthal. Last years womens winner Fiona Docherty was forced to withdraw from the event. Graeme Pearson assisted blind triathlete Gillian Walker in her Ironman Switzerland race last weekend. This weekend he was competing on his own. Top 20 is not a bad effort for a guy who can now sneak into the 40-44 age bracket. Powerman Emmental August 13, Burgdorf, Switzerland 10k R, 60k B, 10k R Men 1. Urs Dellsperger (SUI), 3:04:47 (42:07, 1:39:24, 43:15); 2. Nicolas Lebrun (FRA), 3:05:39 (42:11, 1:39:25, 44:02); 3. Aunt Betty is sending a supply of Aunt Betty's Creamy Rice to Canada with the lads. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SHELDRAKE THIRD IN SCOTTISH NATIONALS from Ailsa Cuthbert Stephen Sheldrake narrowly missed his second Scottish National title at the Scottish Standard Distance Championships this weekend. In a thoroughly Scottish affair a kilted piper lead the competitors to the start of the sea swim. Sheldrake lead from the start and was first out of the freezing water by a minute and held his lead through the bike. The run was a very tough cross-country affair around the golf course and sand-dunes dunes of picturesque Gullane, a seaside town near Edinburgh. Lack of a lead vehicle on the bike and run lead to some confusion amongst the athletes and at the finish only 45 seconds divided the top three places. Scotland's Kevin Clark and Stephen Clark (no relation), who had been training at altitude specifically for this race, came first and second battling it out over the last 2K. Scotland's Olympic hope - Stephanie Forrester - easily won the women's race. Most of the post-race press coverage focused on several huge jellyfish that wandered on to the course. Sheldrake managed to avoid them but four unlucky athletes ended up in hospital! Stephen left Scotland today to head for Canada where he will compete in his first Ironman on August 28th. For those interested the proceedings can be followed live on www.ironmanlive.com Men: Unofficial results 1. Kevin Clark (SCO), 2:04:17; 2. Stephen Clark (SCO), 2:04:20; 3. Stephen Sheldrake (NZL), 2:05:04; 4. Andy Tarry (ENG), 2:06:17; 5. Jack Maitland (SCO), 2:06:30; ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SELECTION RACE Not official yet but rumour has it that a North Island selection race over the 1500 / 40 / 10 distance will be held on January 21st 2001 at Kinlcoh. The event will be organised by the Taupo TARTS club. Excellent timing 4 weeks prior to National Champs in Napier on the weekend of February 17th and 18th ------------------------------------------------------------------------ QUEEN OF THE RAIN from Sean Clark The Swiss media dubbed her the "Queen of the Rain". An appropriate title considering the atrocious weather conditions this past Sunday in Zurich for Ironman Switzerland. In torrential rain and freezing temperatures, Tara-Lee reached a new level with her race result in Switzerland. She joins elite company with the finishing time of 9:15!!! Definite world class speed. Only around half a dozen women ever, have run as fast off the bike as she did: 3:09. Tara-Lee had the fastest bike (5:05) and run split of the day. With world class athletes such as Katja Schumacher, Rina Hill, and Robin Rooke (World Champions and past Ironman winners), Tara-Lee came out on top. Tara-Lee has definitely broken through and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. On June 25th, Tara-Lee won the New Balance Half Ironman in Victoria B.C. This race has been won in the past by: Lori Bowden (World Ironman Champion), Melissa Spooner (Multi-ironman winner), and Jaquie Lewis (top ironman competitor). Tara not only won the race handily, but broke her existing course record (on a longer course) by 3 minutes!! Tara now is deciding on Ironman Canada in three weeks, or to wait until Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Tara-Lee thanks her sponsors: I.B.C., Powerbar, Oakley, Giro, Ironman Wetsuits, Syntace, Carnac, Brooks, Leader and Computrainer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FOR SALE Looking for a bike that handles well, is very receptive as it climbs with ease and provides the strength to get up and go, then do I have the bike for you . 1999 Peugeot aluminium altec Team Line "Festina" model in striking blue and white.
