SNUFFY YOU BEAUTY
ITU World Cup - Tiszaujvaros
August 6, Tiszaujvaros, Hungary
1.5k S, 40k B, 10k R
Take note of this result it is a significant one for Shane Read. Read broke
away from the lead bunch near the end of the cycle and lead for most of the
run before dropping one place to finish second just like he was second in
this ITU race last year.
A repeat second placing this year for Snuffy is further confirmation of his
growing consistency at the top level.
Remember 1999 when we saw a Kiwi quinella with Hamish Carter winning the
event and Shane second.
This years event was won by Czech Martin Krnavek. Look behind Shane and
you see big names like Dimitry Gaag 4th, 1999 World Champion Chris
McCormack 6th and Ben, the fish, Sanson 7th
Men
1. Martin Krnavek (CZE), 1:45:29 (18:16, 53:50, 32:28)
2. Shane Reed (NZL), 1:46:04 (17:55, 53:30, 33:45)
3. Csaba Kuttor (HUN), 1:46:10 (18:14, 53:54, 33:05)
14. Matthew Reed (NZL), 1:49:21 (18:11, 53:52, 36:20)
DNFs Paul Amey (NZL), Jamie Hunt (NZL).
Women
1. Loretta Harrop (AUS), 1:54:42 (19:21, 58:06, 36:12)

TARA-LEE IRONMAN VICTOR
Two really good reports on Ironman Switzerland can be found at www.xtri.com
and www.ironmanlive.com
Tara-Lee produced the fastest womens bike and run splits. Her 3.09
marathon is one of the quickest Ironman marathons produced this year.
Tara-Lee is now looking toward Ironman Hawaii. No false ideas about going
to win. This year Tara-Lee is going to learn how to race in the heat of
Hawaii. Expect a serious Hawaiian attempt in future years.
It has been a long wait for a Kiwi victory over the Ironman distance, five
years and five months in fact since Sue Clark won Ironman New Zealand in
1995.

OTHER KIWIS AT IRONMAN SWITZERLAND
Stephen Amohia Sohan, 30-34 11.47.10

Brett Hickman 25-29 10.05.42
Richard Lawton 25-29 11.04.20
Stephen Summersby, 30-34 11.33.42

IRONKIWIS FOR THE FUTURE
With the coming of age of Cameron Brown and young talents like Andrew Vane
and Stephen Sheldrake now stepping up to Ironman distances future victories
should not be so long in the waiting.
Don't just expect it from the men we also have Karen Ballance and Jo Lawn as
exciting prospects. Crikey I'd better mention Peter Clode also. Tara-Lee
can now compete with a new confidence in her abilities and the mental
strength of knowing just what she is capable of.
Anyone want to guess who the next Kiwi Ironman victor will be ? Tougher
still - when and where will that victory come ?
It is gonna be tough waiting until March 3rd for the Air New Zealand Ironman
2001 when we should see our new Ironman Champion Tara-Lee racing on her
home soil of Taupo.
The wait until then will just add to the excitement. Has anyone else got
there Taupo accommodation booked yet ?

LET THE HOT AIR BEGIN
It's interclub duathlon season again and we all know what that means - time
for the loyal clubbies to begin spouting how well their club will do at this
years interclub. First off the ranks this year is North Harbour Tri Club.

NORTH HARBOR TRIATHLON CLUB QUIETLY CONFIDENT
from Henry Barfoot
Now less than three weeks to go to the race of the winter! That's less than
three weeks for the Crocs to babysit the Shield for us because unlike the
All Blacks we aren't going to lose at the final whistle. The NHTC team is
taking shape and promises to be bigger and better than last year. Rumour has
it the TARTS club heard about the depth of talent we are fielding in every
age group and decided not to send a team up! Our star-studded team includes
several New Zealand representatives, a three-time national duathlon champion
and numerous dark horses ready to take on the best the rest of the country
can offer...or just the best of the rest. We just hope the Crocs aren't just
training for the Boat Race contest and will be able to offer a decent
challenge!

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
a note from Dean Jagusch
Hi there all,
Well yesterday was the day that had been my main focus for the past few
months and all I can say is "What might have been….."
After withdrawing from the St Paul, MN NATS race 2 weeks ago to focus on
producing a solid home town performance in Madison, I went into yesterdays
race feeling confident and rested.
Our strong pro-field of 20+ men hit the water at a little after 10.30am
yesterday morning. The heat was always going to be on from the gun with
strong swimmers such as Doug Friman, Lee Dryden and Nick Radkewich all
toeing the line.
I pulled off a mediocre swim, exiting the water a minute and a half behind
the leaders. Fellow Kiwi, Will Smith and another guy were in between the
front pack of 6 and my pack of 4, they were a minute ahead.
Our group formed up quickly and worked well together. We caught Will and his
swim partner within the first half of the first of 4 rolling laps of the
University of Wisconsin Arboretum. The group was again reduced to 4 after
Will withdrew and another guy punctured.
After the first lap we had reduced the gap to the front pack by more than 40
secs. Unknown to us there had been some "co-operation" problems in the front
pack and a 2-man breakaway of Victor Plata and Doug Friman had opened a gap
on the other 4. Coming into the third lap we had the dropped 4 in sight.
Upon approaching them, we could see that they were not working, so put the
hammer down and tried to blow past them.
Nick Radkewich responded and eventually a group of 8 formed. I sat on the
front and controlled the pace until I got sick of nobody coming through to
take a pull. I put in a slight surge on the first rise of the final lap. At
the top of the hill I looked back to see I had opened a huge gap on the
disorganized group. I decided to put the hammer down for the rest of the lap
before the run. I had opened up a massive gap of 200m with no challenge and
now had the leaders in sight…….
Then it happened, I took a tight right hand corner just after the halfway
mark and felt my rear wheel slide out. Concerned, I looked down to see that
I was fast losing air in my rear tire. I rode out front for another 2 miles
and tried to make it back to the end of the bike course. A mile out from
transition and my tire was completely flat and it became too dangerous to
continue riding it, I pulled off and waited 20 secs before the chase pack
went by.
Basically I was out of the money, but this being a focus race for a while, I
decided to run my bike in the last mile and do the run in any case. You
never know what could happen to some of the guys in the intense humidity that
we were experiencing.
I started the run in about 15th place and about 3 minutes 30 down on the
last pack. I ran a solid 10k and manage to pick off a couple of stragglers,
finishing 8 minutes 30 off the winning time in 13th place………….what might
have been.
The race was won by Doug Friman, with Nick Radkewich in second, followed by
Victor Plata in third.
Obviously I am a little disappointed but I am now focusing my efforts on my
next 2 races, NATS Detroit in 2 weeks time and the USA pro-nationals in
Chicago the following week.
Until next time, take care and I hope all is well.
