NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION CHASES FIRST IRONMAN WIN
from Ian Hepenstall Media Manager Ironman New Zealand
New Zealand champion Cameron Brown will chase his first international
Ironman triathlon victory at Ironman USA at Lake Placid on Sunday (US time).
Brown, 28, is top seed for the event after finishing third last year behind
Germany’s Thomas Hellreigel, who also beat the Kiwi home in Ironman New
Zealand in March. The Aucklander has three podium finishes in his three
starts as an Ironman, twice runner-up in Ironman New Zealand and third at
Lake Placid last year.
Brown struggled in early races in the United States before finishing an
unlucky 13th at the world long distance championships in Nice when he
punctured on the bike leg.
The New Zealand has been happy with his buildup since returning to his base
in San Diego, before this week moving to Lake Placid.
With more than 2000 triathletes, the Lake Placid race is the biggest on the
North American Ironman calendar, with plenty of tough competition. The main
challenge is expected to come from Denmark’s Torgjo Sindballe, 10th at last
month’s world course championships, and well-performed Americans Cam Widoff
(seventh at Nice), Jimmy Riccitello and Tony DeBoom, brother of 1998 Ironman
New Zealand winner Tim DeBoom.
``Things have gone well in my lead up, although the competition is very
tough. There’s no Hellreigel, but there are five or six very good ironmen
who could win,’’ Brown said.
``I hope I have had my bad luck for this week with my chain breaking today
on my last training ride before race day.’’
Favourite for the women’s title is 1998 Ironman New Zealand winner Melissa
Spooner from Canada, who is chasing her third Ironman victory, in her first
real test since suffering injury following her win at Taupo.
