The "Musselman" Multisport Adventure & Cycle Odessey
The great 'Sounds' to 'The Bay' multisport adventure, organised by the
Nelson Triathlon & Multisport Club, is now only 3 weeks away. Sunday 24th
October (Labour weekend) will see the second running of "The Musselman"
event that starts in Picton & finishes in Nelson. Along the way it takes in
some of the top of the South Islands amazing countryside.
The 9.00am race start in the multisport adventure is the Picton foreshore.
The first stage is a 10km paddle out from Picton then up Queen Charlotte
Sound to Momorangi Bay. It's then onto to road cycles for a 42km ride
through to Havelock (the "capital" of NZ's mussel industry) and then onto
Pelorus Bridge. This picturesque native bush reserve area (including a great
tearooms/cafe) is just the ideal spot for a lunch break & a bit of recovery.
The afternoon sees the event continue with a 28km mountain bike ride over
the famous Mangatapu track past Murderers Rock, the site of one of NZ's most
notorious crimes. It's a 4 wheel drive track that provides something for
everyone. A nice gradual climb & some fast downhills (good brakes are a
necessity). The mountain bike finishes at the Maitai Dam (Nelson Citys water
supply catchment) & then it's into the final stage a 14km run into Nelson
City down the narrow Maitai Valley. It's all downhill (we've taken out last
years climb, too many moans!!) on gravel roads & when closer to the city on
tarseal. The event finishes with a short climb to the finish line at the top
of the Centre of NZ. This is the geographical centre of NZ & provides a
great view of Nelson City & Tasman Bay.
The cycle odessey option allows participants to road cycle from Picton thru'
to Pelorus Bridge & then mountain bike from Pelorus to the finish on the
Centre of NZ.
For those wanting an easier day the mountain bike can be done on its own or
there is a duathlon of mountain bike & run. All events cater for teams as
well as individuals. In fact if you need team members we'll find them for
you!!
This is a great event to start your summer racing heading towards Coast to
Coast & caters for those wanting to go hard or those just wanting a nice
cruisy training day out. Many of last year entrants went on to put in
excellent performances at Coast to Coast. Don't expect performance prizes
(we will have a few spot prizes thou') just a great day out & at minimal
entry fee cost. $15 for multisport event & $10 for the cycle event. Entry
fees to cover rescue craft & medical support following the event.
If you would like an entry form or any more info e-mail
net_coldicott@clear.net.nz or phone Chris on (03) 545-1666 or Norman (03)
544-4730 (both evening nos) or write to P O Box 906, Nelson. See you at the
"Musselman"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Your biggest challenge isn't someone else. It's the ache in your lungs and
the burning in your legs, and the voice inside you that yells 'CAN'T", but
you don't listen. You just push harder. And then you hear the voice whisper
'can'. And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for
the one you really are."
